Kansas City RB
Charles (5-11, 199) led the Chiefs in rushing yards (1,120), yards from scrimmage (1,417), combined net yards (2,342) and total TDs (nine) in 2009, registering five 100-yard rushing games. Over the season’s final eight games, his 968 rushing yards ranked second in the league behind only Tennessee RB Chris Johnson (1,047), while his 1,126 yards from scrimmage over that span were topped only by Johnson (1,388).
Charles became the first player in NFL history to rush for over 1,100 yards on fewer than 200 rushing attempts, needing just 190 carries to become the ninth player in Chiefs history to record a 1,000-yard campaign. His 259-yard performance at Denver was the eighth-highest single-game rushing total in NFL history.
The second-year performer produced four consecutive 100-yard rushing games to conclude the 2009 season. Charles compiled 361 rushing yards his final two games, the most rushing yards in consecutive games in Chiefs history. The first player in franchise history to register four TD runs of 40 yards in a season, he led the NFL with a 5.89 yards-per-carry average (min. 150 atts.).
The weekly FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Awards are also a win for local communities. Along with the player awards, FedEx is making a $1,000 donation in Charles’ name to the local Safe Kids coalition in Kansas City to support pedestrian safety improvements. Safe Kids USA is a national non-profit organization that works to prevent accidental injury among children.
During the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIV, FedEx plans to announce the 2009 FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year in South Florida, as well as making a donation in each winning player’s name to Safe Kids USA.
As the Official Delivery Service Sponsor of the NFL, Super Bowl and Pro Bowl, FedEx understands the need for a winning game plan, and created the Air & Ground program to highlight superior on-field performance while delivering safe kids off the field. Because FedEx has thousands of delivery trucks out on the roads each day, the company is committed to funding pedestrian safety improvements through its 10-year partnership with Safe Kids USA.
