2013 NFL Draft Spotlight - Day 3: Dee Milliner

Posted Mar 26, 2013

We spotlight the Unanimous First-Team All-American DB from Alabama

The 2013 NFL Draft Spotlight series continues, as we preview one pro prospect per day, right up until the start of the draft, April 25-27. However, none of the reports in this series are indicative of who the Kansas City Chiefs plan to draft, with any of their currently-owned eight picks.

Dee Milliner made a big name for himself in 2012. One season earlier, he helped the Crimson Tide win a national champsionship but was playing behind other star players in Alabama's lineup, like Dre Kirkpatrick, Dont’a Hightower and Mark Barron, all three were selected in the first round of the 2012 draft.

Milliner showcased his elite combination of size and athleticism again in 2012, including his blanket-like coverage against Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert in the BCS title game, won by Alabama for the second-straight season.

Milliner is ready to join his former Alabama teammates in the NFL and he helped prove his case at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.

Combine stats:
40-yard dash (4.37 sec) - Best time in his group
Vertical Jump (36.0 in.)
3-Cone Drill (6.95 sec)
20-yard Shuttle (4.32 sec)

What else should you know about Dee?

* At 6'0, 201, he can hold his own against WRs, across the middle and down the sideline
* It's all about the hips - Milliner's hip fluidity allows him to open up when needing to stay with deep routes or drop into zone coverage
* Playing for head coach Nick Saban, he's used to advanced pattern-reading principles, directing LBs on combo coverages, on the outside
* First team All-SEC
* Alabama's top cornerback in 2012 with 12 starts, 54 tackles, two INTs and 18 pass breakups
* 2-time BCS National Champion

At times, he can lose track of the ball in the air, causing him to mistime his attack.

Known to dive at the ball carrier's feet, Milliner will likely be challenged to quit that habit, which can allow the opponents to evade his tackles.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Milliner would undergo surgery to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder.

"The doctors have informed us that he (Milliner) will be 100 percent and fully recovered in time for training camp in July," Tony Fleming, one of Milliner's reps with Impact Sports, told Schefter.
