With a large payday potentially on the horizon, Chiefs’ Justin Houston keeps his focus narrow

Excerpt from The Kansas City Star

“ST. JOSEPH - In the last few months, as speculation about his unhappiness with his contract status swirled, Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston was largely quiet, save for the occasional tweet.

So perhaps it was only fitting that when he spoke publicly Thursday for the first time in months, Houston remained suitably tight‐lipped about the prospect of playing out the final year of his rookie deal, despite his status as one of the lowest‐paid starters on defense…” READ MORE…

Jason La Canfora: ‘Alex Smith Is A Bridge QB For Reid’

Excerpt from CBS Sports Radio

“Baseball has the dog days of summer. Well, football has the holdout days of training camp.

The Kansas City Chiefs avoided a long standoff with their best player, Jamaal Charles, by signing him to a two‐year extension Wednesday. According to sources, Charles will now make $8.3 million in 2014 – as opposed to $3.9 million – and the deal includes $18.1 million in new money…” READ MORE…

Team‐player Jamaal Charles admits he couldn’t have pulled off a holdout

Excerpt from The Kansas City Star

“So here was Chiefs megastar Jamaal Charles, he wants you to know, zooming toward training camp when his car sputtered out of gas at some vague location along Interstate 29.

Stranded with a dead cell phone, he started the long trudge onward and couldn’t even get a lift from a passing fan…” READ MORE…

Dontari Poe is one of the NFL’s top young players

Excerpt from

“ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- For those with ESPN Insider access, Mel Kiper Jr. and Mike Sando have posted an interesting ranking of the NFL's top 25 players under the age of 25. Nose tackle Dontari Poe was the only Kansas City Chiefs player to make the list, which also includes 23 players who received honorable mention. Poe was ranked seventh.

It's difficult to argue with the inclusion of Poe, 23, who last year developed into a consistently productive player. The 346-pound Poe was so valuable to the Chiefs that they rarely took him off the field in passing or running situations…” READ MORE…

NFL Nation: 4 Downs – AFC West

Excerpt from

“The Kansas City Chiefs won the division in '10. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen fired McDaniels after a 4-12 season marred by Spygate and hired John Elway as the Broncos’ top football executive.

Since then, the Broncos have won three consecutive division titles, one featuring the national phenomenon that was a Tim Tebow-led read-option offense, and two with future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. And the Broncos' crushing February Super Bowl loss notwithstanding, they are coming off a record-setting 2013 with Manning returning and a free-agency haul that included pass-rusher DeMarcus Ware, cornerback Aqib Talib, safety T.J. Ward and receiver Emmanuel Sanders. The Broncos are poised to be in the league’s championship conversation again...” READ MORE…

Chiefs' Jamaal Charles thankful for two‐year extension

“ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs welcomed back star running back Jamaal Charles on Thursday for the first day of coach Andy Reid’s second training camp at Missouri Western.

Charles, who signed a two‐year contract extension Wednesday, entered the practice field Thursday to thunderous cheers from fans in attendance…” READ MORE…

Here’s something about Jamaal Charles that Chiefs fans might regret reading

Excerpt from The Kansas City Star

“So, you know that Jamaal Charles agreed to a contract extension with the Chiefs just ahead of the start of full-squad training camp today.

And if you read the good looking man here, you know that this deal was easy beginning of a more difficult process in getting an elite running back, elite pass rusher, and the starting quarterback who made the Pro Bowl last year signed long-term…” READ MORE…

Five questions: Kansas City Chiefs

Excerpt from

“The Chiefs followed a disastrous 2-14 season with an unlikely trip to the playoffs, followed by an even less likely 38-10 lead at Indy, capped by an even less likely second-half collapse.

For Year Two of the Andy Reid/John Dorsey regime much higher than a year ago, the bar moves higher. Possibly, too high…” READ MORE…

Chiefs camp report: Day 1

Excerpt from

“ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Some thoughts and observations on the Kansas City Chiefs' first training camp practice at Missouri Western State University:

Sean McGrath was the Chiefs' leading pass receiver at tight end last season with 26 receptions, but after reporting to camp a day earlier, he was absent from practice. He is reportedly considering retirement. McGrath faces a difficult battle to make the regular-season roster. At tight end the Chiefs have veteran starter Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce and Demetrius Harris. The Chiefs drafted Kelce in the third round last season and have big plans for him in the passing game after he missed all of last season with a knee ailment. Harris was a basketball player in college, but has showed an aptitude as a receiver. McGrath, at the least, is good insurance in the event of an injury to one of the others…” READ MORE…

Houston’s arrival at camp significant, too

Excerpt from

“ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The arrival of running back Jamaal Charles at Kansas City Chiefs training camp received all of the attention. But the appearance of outside linebacker Justin Houston on the campus of Missouri Western State University was, in its own way, just as significant.

Houston, who has made the Pro Bowl in two of his first three NFL seasons, held out from offseason practice in his desire for a new contract better than the one in its final season. He didn't get it -- at least not yet -- but showed for camp, anyway…” READ MORE…

Chiefs’ Red Friday Pep Rally will be at Union Station, feature fireworks

Excerpt from The Kansas City Star

“The Chiefs will play host to their annual Red Friday Pep Rally on Sept. 5 downtown outside of Union Station, which is celebrating its centennial this year. In a news release, the rally promises “music, lights, fireworks and football” as part of the festivities.

The Chiefs open the season Sept. 7 against the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium…” READ MORE…

Chiefs tight end Sean McGrath misses first full practice

Excerpt from The Kansas City Star

“ST. JOSEPH - Tight end Sean McGrath reported to Chiefs training camp Wednesday with the rest of the Chiefs’ veterans.

Former SCSU All‐American getting NFL shot with Kansas City

Excerpt from SCTimes

“ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fred Williams is finally getting his chance in the NFL.

The former St. Cloud State All‐American wide receiver is on the Kansas City Chiefs' training camp roster with the hopes of making the final 53‐man roster by the end of August. Williams signed with the Chiefs last December and went through offseason workouts with the team…” READ MORE…

After Solid Rookie Campaign for K.C. Chiefs, PU Alum Catapano Aiming to Be Dominant Force

Excerpt from The Town Topics

“It reads like something out of a Hollywood script — a late-blooming player from a smaller school gets picked near the end of the NFL draft and goes on to become a contributor for an unheralded team that rises from last place to the playoffs.

But that is the story that former Princeton University football star Mike Catapano wrote last fall as the fullback turned defensive lineman was chosen in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs and went on to help the club go from 2-14 to 11-5 and an appearance in the first round of the NFL playoffs…” READ MORE…
