Alex Smith Nominated for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Posted Nov 14, 2017

The award recognizes those who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field

Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Alex Smith is in the midst of the best season of his career statistically, but his most recent recognition goes beyond the numbers.

Smith was named the Chiefs’ nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award on Tuesday, which identifies players who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.

The award, which was created in 2014 in honor of the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Art Rooney Sr., will be determined by a vote of current NFL players.

Eight finalists will be selected by a panel of former players from the NFL Legends Community and listed on the Pro Bowl ballot when players vote on Dec. 15.

Each team’s players will then form a consensus vote for who they believe best demonstrates the qualities of sportsmanship, respect for the game and integrity in competition.

The winner, who will be announced the night before Super Bowl LII during the nationally televised NFL Honors show on Feb. 3 on NBC, will receive a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice.

Past winners are running back Frank Gore (2016), defensive back Charles Woodson (2015) and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (2014). Smith looks to become the first Chief to bring home the award.
