Donovan joined the Chiefs in May of 2009 as chief operating officer

Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt today named Mark Donovan as the club’s president. As president, Donovan will be responsible for every aspect of the Chiefs business operations and will report directly to Hunt.

“Mark has been a critical member of the organization since joining us in May of 2009, and I am delighted to promote him to president,” Hunt said. “With Mark directing the business operations of the Chiefs and Scott Pioli running the football operations, I believe we have one of the finest executive teams in professional sports.”

Donovan said he was honored to lead the Chiefs business operations and is excited about the future of the organization.

“I want to thank Clark and the entire Hunt family for their support, confidence and trust,” Donovan said. “It is a real privilege to be part of such a storied franchise, and it’s especially exciting to have the opportunity to play an active role in shaping the next chapter in Chiefs history.”

Donovan joined the Chiefs in May of 2009 as chief operating officer and has been instrumental in leading the organization through the grand opening of the New Arrowhead Stadium and the return of Monday Night Football to Kansas City. He has also played a key role in establishing the stadium as a major player in the national sports and entertainment scene.

Under Donovan’s leadership, Arrowhead will once again host concerts with tour stops for both Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift slated for 2011. World class soccer has also returned to Arrowhead including the Clasico Bud Light professional soccer match between long-time rivals Club Deportivo Guadalajara S.A. de C.V. (Chivas) and Club America; and last summer’s match featuring one of the world’s most popular sports franchises, Manchester United vs. Sporting KC.

With the Chiefs, Donovan has leveraged his 12 years in the National Football League to bring an organization-wide focus on improving the fan experience through improved customer relations; expanded relationships with radio and television broadcast partners; and a transformation of to the foremost online destination for Chiefs information.

Donovan came to Kansas City after a six-year stint as senior vice president for business operations for the Philadelphia Eagles. Donovan led the Eagles efforts in sponsorship sales and service, television and radio productions, retail operations, event acquisition and ticket sales, as well as new media strategy. He also directed premium sales and customer service. Donovan’s tenure with Philadelphia saw the franchise gain several prestigious awards. In 2007, Forbes magazine named the Eagles as the “fastest growing brand” in the NFL. Under his direction, The Eagles Television Network won 32 Emmys and 53 Telly Awards; and was selected the best overall website among NFL teams three times.

Prior to joining the Eagles, Donovan was the NFL’s senior director of sales and marketing where he played an active role in developing new revenue for the league. Upon his arrival at the NFL office in September of ’99, Donovan managed the relationships with the league’s major corporate partners and oversaw numerous league-wide marketing initiatives.  He served as director of sales and marketing for the National Hockey League from ’97-99 after a five-year stint in the private business sector.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native graduated from Brown University with a double major in Political Science and Organizational Behavior/Management. He captained the Brown football squad as the team’s quarterback and signed with the N.Y. Giants as a free agent upon graduation. 

Along with his family, Donovan has been involved in a number of philanthropic efforts in Kansas City. He has helped foster the development of the Chiefs Community Caring Team, encouraging members of the organization to participate in ongoing club efforts with local charities.

He and his wife Kathleen have two children - Luke and Maeve.
