Earlier this year, the Kansas City Chiefs gave a special surprise to one local school. Scott Elementary, the initial Chiefs Red Friday Spirit School of the year, had some party crashers during their Chiefs-themed school assembly. As third and fourth grade students held an NFL-themed talent show, KC Wolf and former Chiefs Pro Bowl LS Kendall Gammon snuck into the school. That’s when Gammon took to the microphone and let Scott’s students, teachers and administrators know they had been selected the first Chiefs Red Friday Spirit School of the year. Then, he handed over 1,000 complementary tickets to everyone associated with Scott so they could watch the Chiefs play host to the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday at the New Arrowhead Stadium.

“Congratulation Scott Elementary,” Gammon boomed on the microphone. “You’ve been chosen as our first Chiefs Red Friday Sprit School. In fact, you’ve shown such great Chiefs spirit that we need to be sure you’re in the stands rooting your favorite team onto victory. I want to make sure you’re cheering for the Chiefs as loud at the game as you are right now!”

The Chiefs Red Friday Spirit School celebration is part of the organization’s effort to honor local schools that exhibit Chiefs spirit and exemplify the Chiefs “PLAY 60” ideals of eating right and staying active. This season-long Chiefs Red Friday Spirit School program began Friday before the opening game and will continue throughout the Chiefs season.

The “Chiefs Community Caring Team” includes members from the Chiefs organization who participate in community outreach efforts throughout the year. It consists of not only position groups but also the Chiefs Rookie Club, Chiefs Women’s Organization, KC Wolf, Chiefs Cheerleaders, Chiefs Ambassadors, alumni, Chiefs Red Coaters and other Chiefs staff members.

Local schools from throughout the region are encouraged to share how they are showcasing their Chiefs fandom and practicing the healthy lifestyles exemplified by the Chiefs “PLAY 60” movement. Each week, a new Chiefs Red Friday school will be chosen that best exemplifies these criteria. As a reward, the winning school will receive a special Chiefs assembly complete with members of the “Chiefs Community Caring Team” spreading the Chiefs “PLAY 60” message.

The Chiefs will also recognize a local NFL PLAY 60 Super School later this season. One of 34 NFL PLAY 60 Super Schools selected from throughout the country, this local school will receive a $10,000 NFL PLAY 60 health and wellness grant. It will be presented at a special “Chiefs Community Caring Team” school visit, which will be held later this season.
