Matt Cassel will replace Patriots QB Tom Brady on the AFC's Pro Bowl squad

Matt Cassel is once again filling in for an injured Tom Brady. Reports surfaced out of New England last night that Brady will forgo the 2011 Pro Bowl, opting for surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot. News of Cassel’s promotion as Brady’s Pro Bowl replacement soon followed.

After speaking with the NFL Office on Thursday morning, the Chiefs confirmed that Cassel will join the 2011 AFC Pro Bowl roster.

Cassel (6-4, 230) started 15 games in 2010, completing 262 of 450 passes for 3,116 yards with a career-high 27 TDs and seven INTs, good for a personal-best 93.0 rating. His 27 TD passes tied for the fourth-highest single-season total in team history. He finished second in the NFL with a franchise-record +20 TD/INT differential, trailing only Patriots QB Tom Brady (+32). During the 2010 season, he enjoyed a career-long stretch of 162 consecutive pass attempts without an INT, the third-longest streak in Chiefs history, while his 1.56 INT percentage ranked fourth in the NFL. The University of Southern California product earned AFC Offensive Player of the Month accolades in November after connecting on 90 of 144 passes (62.5%) for 1,111 yards with 12 TDs and only one INT for a 111.2 rating.

Cassel’s promotion currently gives the AFC West Champion Chiefs four Pro Bowlers on this year’s AFC squad. The Kansas City quarterback will join teammates Brian Waters, Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe in Hawaii. Kickoff is slated for Sunday, January 30th at 6:00 PM (CST) on FOX.

The Chiefs may have other Pro Bowl alternates awaiting a call-up as well.

Other quarterbacks on the AFC squad include Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers. Cassel is the first Chiefs quarterback selected to the Pro Bowl since Trent Green received an invite in 2005.
