Chiefs fall 40-24 in Home Opener

Opening Season Scoring Drives: The Chiefs scored on each of their first three drives of the season opener for the first time since scoring on each of their first three drives vs. the New York Jets on Sept. 11, 2005.

  • Today, K Ryan Succop booted a 39-yard field goal; TE Kevin Boss hauled in a 22-yard TD pass from QB Matt Cassel; and Cassel scored a TD on a five-yard rush. On Sept. 11, 2005, RB Larry Johnson recorded a 35-yard touchdown run; RB Priest Holmes scored a touchdown on a three-yard rush; and K Lawrence Tynes converted a 41-yard field goal.

Routt’s Forced Fumble: CB Stanford Routt forced a fumble of WR Harry Douglas. It marks his first forced fumble of the season and the second of his career.

First Chiefs Catch, First Chiefs Touchdown: TE Kevin Boss’ first reception as a member of the Chiefs went for a 22-yard touchdown from QB Matt Cassel with 11:39 left to play in the first half. It was his 22nd-career touchdown reception.

Houston’s Sack: LB Justin Houston recorded his first sack of the season taking down QB Matt Ryan for a seven-yard loss. He now has 6.5 sacks for his career.

Spreading the Love: Seven different receivers caught at least two passes in today’s contest.

Offensive Game Leaders: WR Dexter McCluster caught six passes for 82 yards (13.7 avg.) to pace all Chiefs receivers. RB Jamaal Charles led all Chiefs rushers with 16 carries for 87 yards (5.4 avg.).

Defensive Game Leaders: LB Derrick Johnson recorded eight tackles (seven solo) to pace the Chiefs defense. LB Justin Houston recorded the team’s only sack of the day (-7.0 yards) and also led the club with two quarterback pressures.
