Kansas City opens the 2011 preseason with a matchup vs. Tampa Bay at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday, Aug. 12. It will mark the opening game for both squads in 2011 as each team finished with matching 10-6 records a year ago. The contest marks the second-consecutive preseason that the Chiefs have played the Buccaneers.

Arrowhead Stadium once again proved to be friendly to the Chiefs in 2010. Kansas City finished with a 7-1 regular season mark at Arrowhead Stadium, marking the sixth time the team has finished 7-1 or better at the facility.

The 2010 season marked a turning point for the Chiefs franchise as Head Coach Todd Haley’s squad turned in a 10-6 record after a 4-12 performance in 2009. It marked the best single-season turnaround in franchise history. The Chiefs won the AFC West Championship and earned a home playoff game for the fi rst time since 2003.

Kansas City ranked in the NFL’s top 10 in 10 different categories at the end of the 2010 season. The Chiefs won the league’s rushing title, registering 2,627 rushing yards. At home in 2010, the Chiefs gained a league-high 1,463 rushing yards, the third-highest mark in franchise annals.

The Chiefs fi nished 11th in the NFL a year ago, allowing 326 total points. Kansas City only allowed its opponents to score on 28.1% of their offensive drives, the seventh-lowest mark in the NFL. CB Brandon Flowers, LB Derrick Johnson and S Eric Berry each returned an interception for a touchdown, the fi rst time the club returned three interceptions for scores since 2003.

QB Matt Cassel begins his third season at the helm of the offense after garnering a Pro Bowl invite a year ago. RB Jamaal Charles fi nished second in the NFL in 2010 with 1,467 rushing yards to earn his fi rst Pro Bowl invite. WR Dwayne Bowe caught a league-high 15 TDs and was elected to his initial Pro Bowl. On defense, Johnson paced the club with a career-high 147 tackles.

The Chiefs will end the St. Joseph, Mo. portion of their training camp on Wednesday, Aug. 17 before resuming camp in Kansas City on Sunday, Aug. 21. Kansas City plays its second preseason game at Baltimore on Friday, Aug. 19. Tampa Bay hosts New England on Thursday, Aug. 18.

Tampa Bay holds a 4-1 edge over Kansas City in preseason action. The Bucs won the last meeting by a 20-15 count at Tampa Bay (8/21/10), while the Chiefs claimed a 17-13 decision in a game played at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. (8/8/98).

Kansas City and Tampa Bay each have fi ve wins in the all-time regular season series. The Buccaneers have won the last three regular season meetings in the series, one of which was played at Arrowhead Stadium. In both the preseason and regular season, Kansas City is 3-3 when playing vs. Tampa Bay at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City’s last regular season victory vs. Tampa Bay was when Pro Football Hall of Famers QB Joe Montana and RB Marcus Allen made their regular season debuts in Chiefs uniforms in a 27-3 win on Opening Day (9/5/93).
