Kansas City looks to rebound with a trip to Detroit to face the Lions on Sunday, Sept. 18. The Chiefs stand 0-1 in the regular season after an Opening Day 41-7 loss vs. Buffalo (9/13). Detroit won its first game of the season by a 27-20 count at Tampa Bay (9/13). Sunday’s game features two head coaches hired in 2009 in Kansas City Head Coach Todd Haley and Detroit Head Coach Jim Schwartz.

The 2010 season marked a turning point for the Chiefs franchise as Kansas City turned in a 10-6 record after a 4-12 performance in 2009. It marked the best single-season turnaround in franchise history. The Chiefs won the AFC West Championship and earned a home playoff game for the first time since 2003.

Dating back to 2010 season, the Lions have won five consecutive regular season games. QB Matthew Stafford leads the Detroit offense after throwing for 305 yards and three touchdowns last week at Tampa Bay. RB Jahvid Best paced Detroit with 72 yards against the Buccaneers while WR Calvin Johnson had 88 receiving yards with two scores. On the defensive side of the ball, CB Chris Houston intercepted a Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman pass.

Kansas City ranked in the NFL’s top 10 in 10 different categories at the end of the 2010 season. The Chiefs won the league’s rushing title, registering 2,627 rushing yards. On the road in 2010, the Chiefs gained a 1,164 rushing yards to rank fifth in the league.

The Chiefs finished 11th in the NFL a year ago, allowing 326 total points. Kansas City only allowed its opponents to score on 28.1% of their offensive drives, the seventh-lowest mark in the NFL. CB Brandon Flowers, LB Derrick Johnson and S Eric Berry each returned an interception for a touchdown.

QB Matt Cassel begins his third season at the helm of the offense after garnering a Pro Bowl invite a year ago. RB Jamaal Charles finished second in the NFL in 2010 with 1,467 rushing yards to earn his first Pro Bowl invite. WR Dwayne Bowe caught a league-high 15 TDs and was elected to his initial Pro Bowl. On defense, Johnson paced the club with a career-high 147 tackles.

Kansas City has a trip to San Diego for a contest with the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3:05 p.m. (CT). Up next for Detroit is a game at Minnesota on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Noon (CT).

Kansas City is 7-4 (.636) all-time in regular season action against Detroit. The Chiefs have posted a 5-1 (.833) mark in contests at Arrowhead Stadium. The Lions lead the series in games at Detroit by a 3-2 mark (.600). The two clubs have played in three different facilities in Detroit, including Tiger Stadium, the Pontiac Silverdome and Ford Field. Detroit and Kansas City have matched up 10 times in preseason action with the Lions leading the series by a 6-4 (.600) mark.

Detroit won the last game between the two clubs by a 25-20 count at Ford Field (12/23/07). The Chiefs spent seven hours on the runway at the Kansas City airport waiting out a snowstorm before departing for Detroit. QB Damon Huard threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Detroit has hosted Kansas City for a pair of Thanksgiving Day games, as the Lions have won both of those contests.

Kansas City has won the last three games at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs clinched the 2003 AFC West with a 45-17 win vs. Detroit (12/14/03) in the Lions last game at Arrowhead Stadium. QB Trent Green became the fi rst QB in Chiefs history to post a perfect 158.3 passer rating. The Chiefs three-game home winning streak against the Lions started with a 43-24 victory (10/14/90), a game in which RB Barry Word rushed for 200 yards.
