The Chiefs will host Green Bay (9/2) at the New Arrowhead on Thursday night in the preseason finale for both clubs. Kansas City is coming off a last-minute 20-17 loss vs. Philadelphia (8/27). The Chiefs offense piled up a preseason high 168 rushing yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry in the contest. Meanwhile, Kansas City’s defense recorded 5.0 sacks against the Eagles, the club’s highest total in a preseason contest since producing 5.0 QB takedowns at St. Louis (8/28/03). The Chiefs also limited Philadelphia to five of 17 (29.4%) on third down attempts and recorded the club’s fi rst INT of the preseason.

Kansas City currently is second the NFL in rushing offense, averaging 150.0 ypg, an improvement of 40.3 ypg compared to the three-game mark from the 2009 preseason. The Chiefs are also averaging 23.4 more yards of total offense per game (311.7 to 288.3) compared to this point in 2009. The Chiefs rank fifth in the league in yards per carry (4.6) and are tied for seventh in the NFL in first downs per game (20.0).

Defensively, the Chiefs rank in the NFL’s top 10 in five different categories. KC is fifth in pass defense (173.7 ypg), fifth in yards per play (4.4), sixth in total defense (277.0 ypg) and seventh in first downs per game (16.0). On special teams, the Chiefs are averaging 8.2 more yards per kickoff return (27.2 to 19.0) compared to the three-game mark in 2009, a figure that ranks eighth in the NFL.

Green Bay has posted a 2-1 record in the preseason after finishing the 2009 season with an 11-5 mark. QB Aaron Rodgers returns in 2010 after compiling a 103.2 passer rating in 2009. RB Ryan Grant led the club with 1,253 rushing yards a year ago, while CB Charles Woodson was named the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. All NFL clubs are required to trim their rosters to 75 players on Tuesday, August 31st. Thursday’s game is one final opportunity to evaluate the squad before the NFL’s mandatory cutdown to 53 players on Saturday, September 4th.

Monday Night Football returns to Kansas City next week when the Chiefs host San Diego (9/13) at 9:15 PM (CT) in front of a national primetime TV audience. The game will serve as the second half of ESPN’s Monday Night Football double-header. The contest will also be a part of an NFL-MLB doubleheader at the Truman Sports Complex as the Kansas City Royals will face the Oakland A’s at 2:10 PM.

The Chiefs own a 6-3-1 overall record (6-2-1 regular season and 0-1 postseason) in 10 previous meetings with the Packers.

The Chiefs are 3-2 all-time against Green Bay at Arrowhead. The Packers won their last regular season contest in Kansas City with a 33-22 victory (11/7/07). Kansas City is 3-0 at Lambeau Field, making the Chiefs the only current NFL franchise that Green Bay has faced two or more times at Lambeau without registering a victory.

The last preseason meeting between the two clubs came in the Hall of Fame Game (8/4/03). Kansas City walked away with a weather-shortened 9-0 victory. Including preseason competition, the Chiefs and Packers have squared off at six different sites in the 21 previous meetings between the two teams (11 preseason, nine regular season and one postseason). In addition to Lambeau Field, Arrowhead Stadium and Milwaukee County Stadium, Kansas City and Green Bay have competed in preseason play at the Tokyo Dome (8/1/98) and at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.
