Thum departs the Chiefs after 36 years with the club
The Kansas City Chiefs today announced that Denny Thum has stepped down as President effective immediately. Thum departs the Chiefs after 36 years with the club.
The Chiefs also announced that Chairman Clark Hunt has become the Chief Executive Officer of the club effective immediately. As Chairman and CEO, Hunt will continue to lead the football and business operations of the Chiefs.
“Denny has been an integral part of the Chiefs family and this community for nearly four decades, and we thank him for his dedication and commitment to our organization,” Hunt said. “We appreciate the many contributions he has made to the Chiefs and wish Denny and his family the best in their future endeavors.”
Hunt also said that he does not have immediate plans to fill the President position and no outside search will take place.
Thum expressed his appreciation to the Hunt family and the many colleagues and friends he made during his tenure.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working for the best franchise in the NFL,” Thum said. “I appreciate every opportunity the Hunt family has afforded me and my family and I wish the Kansas City Chiefs all the success they deserve in the future.”
Thum was promoted to the post of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in May of 2006. He had served the previous 10 seasons as the club’s Executive Vice President/Assistant General Manager. Thum originally received the title of Assistant General Manager in ’89 and added the responsibilities of Executive Vice President to his Assistant GM duties in ’96.
The St. Louis, Missouri native began his longtime tenure with Kansas City’s NFL franchise as a staff accountant in ’74 before being promoted to Chief Accountant in ’82. He was named Director of Accounting in ’83 before being elevated to the position of Assistant to the General Manager from ’84-88.
Thum is an alumnus of St. Louis University High School in St. Louis and is a ’74 graduate of Rockhurst College in Kansas City. He currently serves on Rockhurst University’s Board of Trustees after previously sitting on the Alumni Board of Directors. He was selected as the school’s 2006 Alumnus of the Year for Outstanding Achievement and has assisted with fundraising efforts for Rockhurst and its athletic program for many years.
