Chiefs waived cornerback Stanford Routt and signed DT Shaun Smith Monday

A series of changes took place at The University of Kansas Hospital Training Complex. The Chiefs waived cornerback Stanford Routt and signed DT Shaun Smith Monday.

Routt, who signed with the Chiefs in the offseason, after being cut by the Oakland Raiders, started seven games and totaled 21 tackles (19 unassisted), one fumble and two interceptions during his Kansas City campaign. The move not only provides instant opportunity for other members of the Chiefs secondary to prove their value to the team, but also allows a familiar face, Shaun Smith to return to the Kingdom.

Smith, most recently with the Tennessee Titans (2011), energized the Chiefs defense and the crowd in 2010, starting 10 of 16 games, making 56 tackles (30 unassisted) and one sack. The signing will help solidify the team’s defensive front, especially with DE Glenn Dorsey nursing a calf injury and could provide an extra spark to help the team’s cause.

Along with the roster moves, defensive unit saw movement in responsibilities as well. Monday Head Coach Romeo Crennel handed over his defensive coordinator duties to Linebackers Coach Gary Gibbs. Gibbs is in year four with the Chiefs after spending three years as the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2006-2008).
