Posted Apr 4, 2013

We spotlight the First-Team All-Mountain West TE from San Diego State

The 2013 NFL Draft Spotlight series continues, as we preview one pro prospect per day, right up until the start of the draft, April 25-27. However, none of the reports in this series are indicative of who the Kansas City Chiefs plan to draft, with any of their currently-owned eight picks.

Day 12 of 32

Gavin Escobar is projected by many to be among the top five tight ends selected in the upcoming draft. He fits the mold of today's prototypical tight end.

The former basketball player can use his size and footwork to his advantage, creating various types of targets for his QB to attack opposing defenses.

Escobar redshirted during the 2009 season, before playing 13 games as a freshman, including the last 12 as a starter. He totaled 29 catches, 323 yards and four TDs. 19 of his receptions resulted in either a first down or a touchdown.

His numbers dropped a bit in 2010 but he picked up the pace during the 2011 season, finishing with 51 grabs for 780 yards and seven TDs.

He also performed for scouts, general managers and coaches at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.

Combine results: Best in his group*

40-yard dash (4.84)

2012 Stat Line: 42 catches, 543 yards and six TDs

"Not a tough-guy by nature but don't have a problem with his effort," according to ESPN NFL Draft Tracker.

"Tall, long-levered and a bit wiry. Still growing into frame. Has improved his angles and initial positioning. Has frame to become an adequate in-line blocker but needs to improved core strength and do a better job getting his hands inside of defenders. Does not show much initial pop at the point of attack. Mostly a position-and-wall-off type blocker at this point. Frequently struggles to sustain and rarely drives defender backwards."
