Draft Spotlight - Day 25: Datone Jones

Posted Apr 17, 2013

We spotlight the former Bruins DE, who totaled 19 tackles for loss in 2012

The 2013 NFL Draft Spotlight series continues, as we preview one pro prospect per day, right up until the start of the draft, April 25-27. However, none of the reports in this series are indicative of who the Kansas City Chiefs plan to draft, with any of their currently-owned eight picks.

Day 25 of 32

Datone Jones (pronounced DAY-tone) overcomes obstacles. After playing in 10 games, including two starts during his freshman season in 2008, he started every game in 2009, totaling 11.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Datone's momentum was altered in 2010 after suffering a fractured right foot in preseason camp, followed by a 2011 season that didn't include numbers to match his personal standards (41 tackles, 6.5 for loss and three sacks).

Putting the past two seasons behind him, Jones once again thrived, totaling 62 tackles (19 of them totaling a loss) and 6.5 sacks in 2012.

Datone participated in the Senior Bowl and later performed at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.

"Jones is a massive, strong defensive end, who fires off of the snap into violent collisions with offensive linemen that he usually wins by staying low and hitting hard," according to Bleacher Report's Sigmund Bloom.

"Jones' motor runs hot, and he can make plays with perseverance when his initial attack fails. He is a handful for any blocker and often draws holds with the endless fight in his game."

ESPN NFL DraftTracker grades Datone Jones as "average" against the run:

"Has a thick trunk. Can set the edge. Quick first step. Quick and violent hands. Does a very good job of locating the ball, disengaging and pursuing. Will make a lot of plays when working down the line and pursuing from behind. Strong upper body (29 reps on bench). However, anchoring versus the run is not his strength when playing inside (as a five-technique in 3-4 scheme)."'s Gil Brandt says the feeling is that Jones "has to" play DE in a four-man front in the NFL.

"Jones stood on his combine numbers and only did the position drills at the school's pro day on Tuesday. We think Jones can be a solid edge defender along with an impactful interior pass rusher due to his combination of strength and quickness off the snap," Brandt wrote.
