Haley, Cassel Scheduled To Square Off At American Century Championship

Haley finished 46th overall at last year's event

Todd Haley has been separated from his Pro Bowl quarterback throughout the ongoing NFL Lockout, but the two are scheduled to get together for the 22nd Annual American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe beginning on Thursday. While chalk talk will be restricted, bragging rights will certainly be on the line as Matt Cassel aims to upend Kansas City’s head coach on the links.

Cassel and Haley will be joined by former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards as well as Trent Green and Marcus Allen in this year’s celebrity field. Cassel is a first-timer while Haley, Edwards, Green and Allen have all participated in the past.

After a solid first day, Haley faded to finish 46th at last year’s event. That ranking was still good enough to beat Allen (62nd), Edwards (74th) and Green (80th). The tournament is a 54-hole modified Stableford format.

Live coverage of the tournament begins Friday on Versus from 3:00 – 6:00 PM (CST). NBC picks up the action beginning on Saturday from 2:00 – 5:00 PM (CST) and will also carry Sunday’s final round during those same times.

Former NFL QB Billy Joe Tolliver, who played in three games with the Chiefs in 1997, is this year’s defending champion. Tolliver previously won the event in 2005 and 1996 as well.

The tournament will help build awareness of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign, while raising funds for the LAF’s cancer survivorship initiatives.  Collaborating with the LAF on the 2011 tournament is a natural fit for American Century Investments, given the fact that more than 40 percent of the asset management firm’s profits go to fund research for the prevention and cure of gene-based diseases such as cancer.
