Chiefs transaction count up to three on the day before free agency begins

Who waits until the official opening of unrestricted free agency to make roster additions? Not the Chiefs.

This afternoon, Kansas City announced their third transaction of March 3rd, the day before unrestricted free agency begins (March 4th at 11:01 PM CST). The signing of QB Tyler Palko joins the release of WR Devard Darling and RB Dantrell Savage in today’s roster maneuvering. Palko’s signing also represents the first free agent signee for the Chiefs this offseason. Kansas City had previously only signed five practice squad players to reserve/future contracts.

The Chiefs now have three quarterbacks under contract for 2010. Restricted free agent QB Matt Gutierrez signed a new contract last week. The addition of Palko shifts attention to what the Chiefs will decide to do with last year’s primary backup, Brodie Croyle.

Croyle is a restricted free agent and the Chiefs have until Thursday’s deadline to offer a tender, else Croyle becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Chiefs carried four quarterbacks to camp a year ago (Croyle, Matt Cassel, Tyler Thigpen and Ingle Martin).

Palko has Arizona Cardinals connections, attending training camp with Arizona to open 2009. He and Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, however, only crossed paths for 21 days. Haley was named Kansas City’s head coach on February 7th, 2009, while Palko joined Arizona on January 15th, 2009.

Palko served as WR Larry Fitzgerald’s quarterback while at the University of Pittsburgh.
