Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus blogs throughout the Big 12 Basketball Tournament

This is the homestretch for “Voice of the Chiefs” Mitch Holthus. What began as preparations for the 2010 football season last July in St. Joseph, Missouri has twiddled down to just a few more broadcasting dates during March Madness.

Holthus has literally gone eight months without a break.

Double-duty began in early December when Holthus began calling a slate of non-conference Big XII and Missouri Valley Basketball games for ESPN and other affiliates. Mid-week road swings were the norm before heading back to Kansas City to fulfill duties with the Chiefs Radio Network and the Hy-Vee Chiefs Insider television show.

On the Saturday prior to the Kansas City AFC Wild Card Game loss to Baltimore, Holthus was in Norman, Oklahoma calling OU’s game against Texas A&M for the Big 12 Network. Rental cars, hotel points and frequent flier miles received full use this winter.

Once football season ended, the basketball schedule kicked into full gear with multiple games each week in the Valley and Big 12.

You might have noticed Holthus sitting on media row throughout the Big 12 Basketball tournament. If you watched any of the games on ESPN, you certainly saw him calling the action for ESPN Radio directly behind Bob Knight and Brent Musburger.

Holthus also took to blogging this weekend for in a series of posts featured on the website’s Covering the Baseline section. If you enjoy watching Chiefs football and college basketball, Holthus’ takes throughout the tournament are well worth the read.

Up next for Holthus are a few NIT dates, but broadcasting season is finally nearing its end. After a much needed vacation, it will be back to Chiefs football for Holthus.

Look for features with Mitch this spring on He’ll also host the Chiefs annual Draft Day Party April 28th (tickets not yet on sale).
