Posted Apr 27, 2017

The Chiefs selected a quarterback in the first round for the first time in 34 years

Patrick Mahomes II is the Kansas City Chiefs’ first quarterback selection in the first round in 34 years.

The last time the Chiefs had selected a quarterback in the first round was Todd Blackledge in 1983. That changed Thursday night.

The Chiefs traded with the Buffalo Bills up to the 10th overall pick to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes II.

So who is Patrick Mahomes II?

Mahomes is a second-team all-Big 12 QB out of Texas Tech University.

Mahomes led the FBS with 421 passing yards per game in his final season with Texas Tech in 2016. Mahomes totaled 5,052 yards passing with 41 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. Mahomes added 22 touchdowns on the ground in 2016.

Mahomes was also an All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2015.

Mahomes has an absolute “cannon.” Watch here:

Andy Reid quickly confirmed that Mahomes would come into Kansas City to learn behind Alex Smith.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media after the pick:

Patrick Mahomes is the son of former MLB journeyman pitcher Pat Mahomes.

Mahomes may actually have the “strong arm” gene in his blood.

Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes, played professional baseball for 11 years as a starter and a reliever for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, Yokohama Baystars (Japan’s Central League), New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.
