The Houston Touchdown Club named Coburn its Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 for his play at Westfield High School. The top-50 overall recruit nationally signed with Texas, redshirting his first season in Austin (making two tackles in three games as a reserve). Coburn started 12 times and played in all 13 of the team's contests in 2019 (26 tackles, 4.5 for loss with two sacks) before starting all 10 games to garner honorable mention All-Big 12 honors in 2020 (25 tackles, 4.5 for loss with one sack) and 2021 (15 tackles, two for loss with one sack in 12 games, 11 starts). He was a second-team all-conference selection as a senior, starting 12 of 13 games played (28 tackles, three for loss with 1.5 sacks).
