A system called the "common draft" was implemented for the AFL and NFL in 1967, creating a joint draft between the two leagues while establishing the precursor for what has become the marquee event of the offseason.
The two leagues merged in 1970, and the rest is history.
Over the next several weeks leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft, we're going to take a look back at who the Kansas City Chiefs have selected in each round since the event's beginnings 57 years ago. Here's a look at what we've covered so far:

- Forty-four of the Chiefs' 61 fifth-round picks went on to play in at least one game for Kansas City.
- The Chiefs selected defensive end BJ Thompson with the No. 166 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Thompson appeared in one game for Kansas City – the regular-season finale – and recorded two tackles.
- Tight end Noah Gray, one of two fifth-round selections for the Chiefs in 2021 (No. 162 overall), caught 28 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns in 2023.
- Defensive end Mike Danna, who the Chiefs selected with the No. 177 overall pick in 2020, has recorded 39 quarterback hits, 17 tackles-for-loss and 17 sacks in 59 games (23 starts) over the last four seasons. His sack total has increased each year, culminating in a 6.5-sack effort in 2023.
- Former wide receiver Carlos Carson, who was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 2017, played in the most games (120) in a Chiefs uniform of any fifth-round pick in franchise history.
- The Chiefs drafted Dante Hall, one of the top return men in NFL history, with the No. 153 overall pick of the 2000 Draft. Hall returned 13 total kicks for scores during his seven years in Kansas City, setting an NFL record with a return touchdown in four-straight games during the 2003 campaign.
- Kansas City selected All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill with the No. 165 pick in 2017. Hill's 6,630 career receiving yards are the fifth-most in franchise history.
- Wide receiver Carlos Carson (120), wide receiver Dante Hall (97 games), wide receiver Tyreek Hill (91), cornerback Brandon Carr (64), defensive tackle Eric Holle (56), defensive end Mike Danna (59), safety Kendrick Lewis (53), offensive guard Derrick Graham (51), linebacker Bob Stein (50) and tight end Noah Gray (50) all played in at least 50 games for Kansas City after being drafted in the fifth round.
