Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid
OPENING STATEMENT: "Alright, as far as the injuries go, really (Mike) Catapano is the only one to mention that didn't finish the game. He has an ankle sprain. (Jamaal) Charles had a knee contusion. He got a little treatment, came back and was able to continue to play and actually did very well. Listen, every win is a good win. This one was awful close, but the guys battled. I mean, what hearts, man. It came out there was like two different games. The first half, everything was pretty smooth and working; they got a couple of big plays and I went for the field goal there at the 35. We were just bombing those son-of-a-guns before the game and it was just off by a hair. We came back and had a big one right at the end, which was important. I appreciated the fans. Down the stretch there, that false start was a tribute to them and how loud it was down there. George Brett looked like he still could swing, doggonit. He was out there with the drumstick. It was great to see him out there; I know he's a big football fan. It was great to see him out there. You know, I'll tell you, there were a lot of good things and there were a ton of things we can get better at and we're just going to keep doing that. We're going to keep working and get some rest and get ourselves back here. We have another week before the bye and a trip up to Buffalo, against a good Bills team. The guys will get themselves back in and we'll start back to work here after they rest up. Time's yours."
Why did the offense get stagnant in the second half?
"You know what; I probably got stale on them. I didn't dial them up as well as the first half. I have to do a better job there. That's two weeks in a row that we've come out a little bit slow in the second half. We have to start better than that and I'll make sure I put the guys in position to do that."
What things do you need to get better at?
"I can't tell you that, because it's all public, you know what I mean. I just have to go back to the grinder and make sure that we're doing the right things."
The fact that this was more of a grind it out kind of victory - is that something you're proud of?
"I am. You know, you mention that, probably being at home three weeks in a row helps, because we were able to get a little extra rest. Those grind it out ones, they're tough. That's a tough deal. I'm glad we were doing that at home with our fans, where the guys can get a couple of extra hours to rest up. That's all part of this. So many games in the National Football League are won by seven points or less. You work hard during training camp, so you're mentally strong to be able to handle things like this and that's what we did. We'll continue to work hard and I'm sure there will be other games just like this where you have to grind them out."
What about the sack ratio this game?
"You're right. I probably need to move them a little bit more so that they move the pocket a little bit more. There were too many sacks, obviously. He (Jason Campbell) was getting the ball out quick on their side. I thought he did a nice job. It was a combination of things. Sacks, from a defensive standpoint, you have to get up and you have to pressure them with the pressure of the receivers and then you have to be able to rush the passer. They did a nice job countering us on that; that's a tribute to their game plan. Norv Turner is a phenomenal, phenomenal coach. He had a nice game plan."
What about Jason Campbell?
"Jason is a good quarterback. There was a reason he was picked in the first round and why he led Auburn to what I believe was an undefeated season. Things didn't work out for him in a couple of places, but he's a heck of a player. I have a ton of respect for him. I mentioned that before we played him and I still feel that way. He's had different coordinators every year of his career. It's one of those stories—you guys have studied that. Quarterbacks, when they get in stable situations, young guys, normally, it kind of works out for them, (but) when you get into those things where you get a bunch of different people coming in, it can hurt you. It can follow you during your career. That doesn't dismiss how much respect I have for him. He's a good player."
