With another Chiefs season begun, it's time to reflect on how team Founder Lamar Hunt looked for ways to engage Kansas City's fans to take interest in the professional football team he brought to the city in 1963.
An obvious place to start was an appeal to the city's young fans.
Much as he had done in Dallas, Hunt quickly instituted an organization he named the "Huddle Club" where young fans were admitted to home games through a special ticket window at Gate 5 of Municipal Stadium by paying $1.00 along with the promise to "attend as many games as possible and spend maximum effort in cheering on the Chiefs victory."
Members received a Huddle Club youth jacket, t-shirt, membership card, player photos, and photo sessions at a special team practice.
Ticket holder Jack Monath saved his collection of "Huddle Club" memorabilia and graciously loaned it to us at the time of the opening of the Chiefs Hall of Honor.
