The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Denver Broncos, 22-19, in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday evening as Denver connected on a game-winning field goal as time expired.
Locked into a tie game at 19 points apiece, the Broncos – facing a 3rd-and-15 deep in their own territory – moved the chains when quarterback Bo Nix found wide receiver Courtland Sutton for a 20-yard gain. Denver then converted another third down a handful of snaps later before Nix connected with wide receiver Troy Franklin for 32 yards deep into Chiefs' territory.
The Broncos then bled the majority of the time remaining on the clock before kicker Wil Lutz converted a game-winning, 35-yard field goal.
"Denver played a good game, and they got us today," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "There were a variety of things that went on that we all contributed to throughout the game – on both sides of the ball, and special teams."
Indeed, the Chiefs had their chances on Sunday, but a series of self-inflicted errors allowed Denver to hang around and ultimately take advantage. Kansas City committed 10 penalties, went 1-for-4 in the red zone and 5-for-13 on third down, but despite those miscues, the Chiefs had the lead when quarterback Patrick Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce for a 21-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
The score put Kansas City in front for the first time all game, but a blocked extra-point kept the Broncos within three points with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest. The Chiefs' defense then quickly forced a Broncos' punt, providing Kansas City with an opportunity to either extend its lead or at least churn some clock, but a quick three-and-out sent the ball back the Broncos' offense, and they didn't waste it.
Denver marched into field goal range and tied the game with a 54-yard kick, again setting the Chiefs up with an opportunity – at just over four minutes remaining – to re-claim the lead. Kansas City went three-and-out again, however, setting up Denver's final scoring drive.
"[We] had an opportunity at the end of the game, and [we didn't] come through. Getting the ball back with four minutes [left], and all we needed was a field goal – that's a spot that we've been in a lot, and we've been able to do that," Mahomes said. "[We have] to be better in that scenario. That's what you want, you want that opportunity at the end of the game, and I didn't' come through."
Those missed opportunities at the end of the game marked a tough finish to an otherwise resilient performance that saw the Chiefs fight back from multiple deficits to tie the game when tailback Kareem Hunt plunged forward for a 2-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
The play came on the heels of a 61-yard completion from Mahomes to wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on third down, seemingly providing the Chiefs with all of the momentum. Hunt then finished the series with a game-tying score, and while Denver added a go-ahead field goal on its next possession, the Chiefs managed to take the lead when Mahomes found Kelce for the aforementioned 21-yard touchdown.
That turned out to be the Chiefs' final score of the night though, and while the defense nearly managed to get off the field on Denver's final possession, the Broncos – to their credit – made a few more plays.
The loss dropped the Chiefs to an even 5-5 on the season. It's not at all where Kansas City planned to be at this point in the year, but as Mahomes discussed following the game, the locker room isn't backing down from the challenge ahead.
"We've dealt with adversity [before], and [we've] gotten better from it," Mahomes said. "This is something that we haven't dealt with so early in the season, but at the same time, I know the guys in that locker room, and how they're going to respond. All we can do is stick together, push ourselves to be even better, and do what we can to win this next week."
In terms of injuries, offensive guard Kingsley Suamataia left the game early due to concussion protocol.
Now at .500 on the season, the Chiefs will aim to get back on track this upcoming weekend with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
