A few days after the draft concluded, Veach sat down in the 65TPT studio and went through the film of three of their picks—giving us a peek at why the Chiefs chose to add them to the roster.
The players discussed were Breeland Speaks, Armani Watts, and the much-discussed Pro Day workout for Kahlil McKenzie, who was working as an offensive guard for the first time after spending all of his time at Tennessee as a defensive lineman.
"When I got to my Pro Day, some teams asked me – the Chiefs being one of them – to work out as an offensive lineman," McKenzie explained of his Pro Day after being selected. "I did those drills, and they felt really good…like they came naturally and knowing how I play the game and knowing a lot of those things could translate into being a very good offensive lineman.
"It made it just a no-brainer decision for me."
Veach also spoke about Mckenzie's Pro Day workout.
"It looked natural to him," Veach noted. "The kid has tremendous physical gifts, and again, I don't know exactly how long this will take because he hasn't played offensive line a long time, but as far as his size and his athletic ability—he has all of the traits.
"If you didn't know that he wasn't an offensive lineman and if you just kind of popped into all of the Pro Days and looked at all of the guys that went in round one, round two, round three, and if you didn't have any background and you didn't watch any tape, the size of [McKenzie] and how he moved and how he adjusted, you would probably put him right at the top of your list."
Here's that video with Veach, which includes a bit of McKenzie's Pro Day workout:
