Five Observations from Tuesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/8

Here are some quick notes from Tuesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the fourteenth practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports can be accessed below.

1. The Chiefs took the field for their eighth padded practice in the last 12 days.

It was another two-hour and 25-minute padded practice at training camp on Tuesday, marking a second-straight – and eighth overall – padded session. The practice included 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills in addition to a special teams' period that focused on a "backed up" punt situation.

The segment provided the special teams' unit with an opportunity to practice a scenario in which the Chiefs were punting from inside their own 5-yard line. This situation creates protection issues due to the shorter distance in-between the snap and the punter, so it was certainly a worthwhile scenario to practice.

The Chiefs will hold five more open practices over the next two weeks at Missouri Western State University. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.

2. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wide receiver Rashee Rice combined to make a great play during 11-on-11 drills.

During a team portion of practice, Mahomes launched a pass off his back foot down the sideline into the arms of Rice, who secured the grab for a large gain. It was a highlight-worthy play that demonstrated the continued growth taking place between Mahomes and Rice.

Tight end Travis Kelce then followed that play with an impressive catch of his own just a few snaps later, going up to make a physical grab over a defender. Rookie tight end Izaiah Gathings also made a noteworthy play on Tuesday, leaping to make a tremendous, full-extension catch during a 7-on-7 period. It was one of two outstanding catches by Gathings, who hauled in a physical grab despite good coverage a bit later.

Another standout from Tuesday's practice was wide receiver Cornell Powell, who adjusted to catch a pass thrown slightly behind him during 11-on-11 work.

3. Rookie defensive back Anthony Cook recorded a noteworthy pass-breakup.

Cook, who signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent back in May, made one of the plays of the morning when he successfully defended a pass deep down the field during 11-on-11 drills. The play appeared to be a win for the offense at first, as the intended receiver initially caught the pass deep down the middle of the field, but Cook arrived just in time to knock the ball free.

It was a great play by Cook, who logged five passes defensed and a forced fumble last season at the University of Texas.

4. We livestreamed a portion of Tuesday's practice.

Our fourth and final livestream of camp took place on Tuesday morning, providing fans with an opportunity to watch portions of training camp from anywhere in the world.

Full, 11-on-11 footage is off-limits because it could reveal play designs to opponents, but this exclusive look included some tight shots of team drills, plus an interview with Ari Wolfe, who will serve as the play-by-play television announcer for the Chiefs' preseason games.

5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.

The players who did not participate in Tuesday's practice due to injury or illness were cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (knee), tight end Jody Fortson (shoulder), wide receiver Kadarius Toney (knee) and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (sick).

The Chiefs will take the field for the fifteenth practice of training camp on Wednesday morning. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
