Five Quick Facts Following the Chiefs Week 5 Loss to Jacksonville | Upon Further Review

The Chiefs dropped a heartbreaker on Monday night

The Kansas City Chiefs dropped a tough one on Monday, falling to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-28, for their third loss of the season.

Here are some quick notes from the loss.

1. The Chiefs raced out to a 14-point lead.

Kansas City compiled a double-digit lead early in the game after recording touchdown drives on two of its first three possessions. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 9-play, 87-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 2-yard strike to tight end Travis Kelce on Kansas City's second possession before engineering a 5-play, 97-yard scoring series one drive later.

The latter score, which Mahomes punctuated with a 9-yard touchdown scramble, represented a 14-point swing following the Chiefs' fourth-down stop defensively at the goal line a few snaps earlier.

Six of the Chiefs' 20 plays during that stretch picked up at least 15 yards.

2. Kansas City's 13 penalties on the night helped Jacksonville get back into it.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Jacksonville erased that double-digit deficit due in large part to a season-high 13 penalties called against Kansas City. In fact, that figure represents the most penalties accepted against the Chiefs in a single game since Week 11 of the 2018 season.

Notably, when trailing by 14 points following the Chiefs' second touchdown drive, a pass-interference call extended a Jaguars' possession that otherwise would have ended with an incompletion on third down. Jacksonville went on to score a touchdown on the series, beginning a run of 21 unanswered points between the second and third quarters.

Penalties hurt the Chiefs at the end of the game, too. Kansas City appeared to have won the game with an interception on the Jaguars' final drive, but another pass-interference call wiped out the takeaway and instead set up Jacksonville's game-winning score.

"We obviously had 13 penalties to their four," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "[If] you have that many penalties [and] you give up field position, you can out-stat them to death, but it doesn't matter. It's the score that matters, and we've got to take care of business there."

3. Patrick Mahomes racked up 378 yards of offense.

Amidst the back-and-forth nature of Monday's game, Patrick Mahomes was brilliant. He completed 29-of-41 passes for 318 yards and a touchdown on the night while also rushing for another 60 yards and a score with his legs, moving the Chiefs into Jacksonville territory on seven of nine possessions. His 378 yards of offense were the fourth-most in a single game by any player this season.

Unfortunately, one of Mahomes' few mistakes on the evening resulted in a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown, turning a likely scoring opportunity into seven points for Jacksonville. Regardless, Mahomes certainly played well enough to win on Monday, it just didn't work out that way.

4. The Chiefs fought back to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes put together a beautiful, 12-play series that covered 86 yards and briefly put the Chiefs ahead late in the fourth quarter on Monday night.

Trailing by three points with just over eight minutes remaining, Mahomes – facing a "have to have it" sort of situation – completed all five of his pass attempts as Kansas City marched toward the end zone.

The series will be forgotten due to the final score, but the offense's resiliency on that drive was nearly enough to get it done.

5. The Jaguars deserve credit for rattling off some clutch plays at the very end.

As impressive as the Chiefs' final scoring drive was, the Jaguars found a way to match it.

Jacksonville covered 60 yards in just over one minute of game action, converting multiple third downs before finding the end zone with only 23 seconds remaining. The big play of the drive took place on the Jaguars' side of the field, facing a 3rd-and-7, when quarterback Trevor Lawrence found wide receiver Brian Thomas for a 33-yard gain.

It was one of several clutch plays for Jacksonville on the series, and paired with some critical penalties on the part of the Chiefs, the Jaguars found a way to win it in the end.

It was a tough result for the Chiefs, who looked poised to win Monday's game at numerous times during the contest, but they'll now need to turn the page in a hurry with a matchup against the Detroit Lions this upcoming Sunday on deck.
