John Dorsey Discusses Roster

Hear Chiefs GM John Dorsey discusses the 2014 roster.

OPENING STATEMENT: "Morning, guys. How are you doing? It's been a long three days in the process with in terms of putting together the 53-man roster, trying to shore up the practice squad, kind of reviewing all the team's other players in these three days, and also on top of that, there's the signing of Alex Smith. I think it's a great day for the franchise, whenever you can secure a player like Alex, there's some stability there. There's a lot of things to be said with regards to this with Clark Hunt's leadership, Trip MacCracken and Brandt Tilis for all of their tireless work and the whole personnel staff in terms of evaluating all of the players and then putting this roster together. And it's a good thing now because we get to play football here in like six days. With that, I'll take your questions."

Q: I know there was a gap between sides not too long ago. When did the movement really start happening to lead up to the agreement?

DORSEY: "Well, you know, as we said all along this has been a long process. Tom Condon is very professional in his approach. We had ongoing discussions and consistent discussions. I'm just glad now that we can concentrate on football. I'm happy for Alex, I am happy for the organization. It's a good day."

Q: What kind of flexibility does that contract offer you going forward?

DORSEY: "As you well know, I don't like to talk to specifics of the numbers in these types of venues but it's a win for both sides and that's all you can ask for and it's time to move on."

Q: What kind of impact does this have on the Justin Houston possible extension?

DORSEY: "Well, it's one step at a time. As we've always said, as this process goes along, we've had discussions with his representatives, and we will continue to have discussions with his representatives."

Q: How important was it for you to get this deal done before the regular season started?

DORSEY: "In my mind, personally, I just think with securing this type of player on your roster, it gives you stability. It's time to move on, it's time to focus for the game of football and get ready for the Tennessee Titans and that's all you can ask for."

Q: Is that a yes then? Was it important for you to get it done before the first game?

DORSEY: "I think it's important that it got done. It's important that it got done for Alex, it's important that it got done for the franchise. It's a good thing, it's a positive step moving forward."

Q: Was there ever a deadline or a drop-dead date that you guys had earmarked?

DORSEY: "We don't talk about negotiation tactics in this type of venue, but it got done and we're all happy."
