Kansas City Chiefs Team Preview

When NFL free agency began on March 16th, the Chiefs swiftly made the move to bring on wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to help bolster an already strong receiver corps. The former Steeler would be looked at as a top option alongside Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, giving Patrick Mahomes a plethora of weapons at his disposal. However, this would merely be a speck on the radar when it came to KC offseason news.

Just days later, news spread that the Chiefs gave Hill permission to seek a trade and the star wide receiver would be traded to the Dolphins days after the Smith-Schuster signing. In the end, the Chiefs received five picks from Miami, including a 2022 first and second-round pick. It's a big void to fill after Hill made 479 catches for 6630 yards and 56 touchdowns as a Chief since 2016. Now, this Kansas City team moves on and brought on some speed to help fill that void.

Alongside Smith-Schuster, the Chiefs will also deploy former Packer Marquez Valdes-Scantling. After playing his entire career with Aaron Rodgers, MVS also has the ability to go deep downfield. Throughout his career, MVS has an aDOT (average distance of target) of 16.6. Last season, he tied his career-high of 18.2, giving Rodgers a huge deep threat. Between Smith-Schuster and MVS, Mahomes will have plenty of men to hit deep downfield when needed. Last season, Mahomes threw the ball 20+ yards 69 times, connecting on 45% of them for 1,071 yards with an average of 13.6 yards per attempt. Both players will complement that strength well, alongside the reliable Travis Kelce at tight end.

The Chiefs knew they needed to load up more than ever. The AFC West is projected to be one of the toughest divisions in all of football. With Russell Wilson on the Broncos, Davante Adams joining Derek Carr in Las Vegas, and Khalil Mack with the Chargers, the West is set to be extremely competitive. The Chiefs dominated the division last season, going 5-1, with their only loss coming in Week 3 against the Chargers. Aside from that, they beat their division foes by an average of 17.8 points.
