In 1967, a system called the "common draft" was implemented for the AFL and NFL. In this system, the two leagues held a joint draft for college players. The "common draft" existed until 1969 as the AFL and NFL would officially merge in 1970.
The following is a list of the 48 players the Chiefs have drafted in the first round since 1967:

- The most popular position for the Chiefs to draft in the first round is offensive line (12), followed by defensive line (10), running back and defensive back (6), receiver (5), linebacker (4), tight ends (3) and quarterback (2).
- All six defensive backs selected in the first round made at least one Pro Bowl in their careers, led by Eric Berry (No. 5 overall – 2010) with five Pro Bowls. Dale Carter (No. 20 overall - 1992) and Gary Green (No. 10 overall – 1977) had four appearances each. Jim Marsalis (No. 23 overall – 1969) and Marcus Peters (No. 18 overall – 2015) earned two Pro Bowl trips and Jerome Woods (No. 28 overall – 1996) had one.
- The Chiefs have selected four players from LSU in the first round of the draft, which is the most for any school. Tyson Jackson (No. 3 overall - 2009), Glenn Dorsey (No. 5 overall - 2008), Dwayne Bowe (No. 23 overall - 2007) and Harvey Williams (No. 21 overall - 1991).
- All 48 former Chiefs first-round picks have combined for 67 Pro Bowl appearances, led by tight end Tony Gonzalez (No. 13 overall – 1997) with 14.
- Of the 48 picks, 26 of them have played in at least 85 career games.
- There are six former first-round picks by the Chiefs that are still currently on the roster. Marcus Peters (No. 18 overall – 2015), Dee Ford (No. 23 overall – 2014), Eric Fisher (No. 1 overall – 2013), Eric Berry (No. 5 overall – 2010), Tamba Hali (No. 20 overall – 2006) and Derrick Johnson (No. 15 overall – 2005).
- The Chiefs had no first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, as they traded out of the first round entirely.
