Andy Reid Provided Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles Injury Updates After Colts Game

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an injury update on quarterback Alex Smith during his post-game press conference on Sunday afternoon.

Smith initially left the game on the opening drive of the first quarter with a lacerated ear.

"They thought initially that the pressure on that slap on his ear had caused his equilibrium to be off just a bit," Reid said. "He had passed the NFL concussion protocol with flying colors, without any problem at all. From there we put him back in."

Smith then suffered another hit in the third quarter and did not reenter the game.

"He got another hit there and obviously did not return," Reid added. "He is doing well now. We will see how things go here."

Running back Spencer Ware also suffered a concussion.

"Spencer Ware had a concussion and did not pass the NFL concussion protocol and did not come back," Reid said.

Offensive lineman Parker Ehinger left the game midway through the third quarter with a knee sprain.

"We will see how that works out over the next couple days," Reid said.

Jamaal Charles

After limited practice Wednesday and Thursday of this week, running back Jamaal Charles was held out by the Chiefs Friday and was later ruled out for the game against the Colts.

Now it appears Charles will be meeting with Dr. James Andrews this week to get his surgically repaired knee checked out.

"Jamaal did not suit up," Reid said. "Jamaal's going to see Dr. (James) Andrews [Monday] and have his knee checked out one more time. We just can't get that thing to where it needs to be for him to play, so we're trying to be as cautious as we possibly can with him."

Charles tore his right ACL during the Week 5 game against the Chicago Bears last season, and he missed the rest of the year.

Charles returned to the Chiefs lineup for their Week 4 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers this season, but he didn't see much action until Week 6 against the Raiders. So far in 2016, Charles has rushed just 12 times for 40 yards and one touchdown. He also has two receptions for 14 yards receiving.
