The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off the 2026 season with a dominant victory over the Denver Broncos, 31-10, on Monday night that that featured standout performances on both sides of the ball.

Notably, tailback Ken Walker – in his Kansas City debut – wasted no time introducing himself with a career-best 191 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. The Chiefs' defense, meanwhile, held the Broncos to just 176 total yards and a 2-for-12 mark on third down.

"I'm proud of our guys and the job that they did," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "A lot of good individual efforts out there, starting with the guys up front on both sides of the ball, and we were able to get our young guys involved in the game. I was proud of how they handled themselves there."

Kansas City essentially controlled the game from wire-to-wire on Monday night as rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane picked off Broncos' quarterback Bo Nix on just the third snap of the contest. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes then quickly turned the takeaway into a go-ahead touchdown with a 15-yard scramble, finishing his first possession following last season's devastating knee injury with – ironically enough – a rushing score.

"[Last year], in the red zone, we weren't [always] able to finish drives, so to be able to do that against that defense, who was – I think – No. 1 in the red zone last year, it was big," Mahomes said. "For me, running, I wasn't going to, [but] going for the end zone, it kind of gave me that confidence that I can go out there and be myself."

Denver then quickly responded with a game-tying touchdown of its own, but after that, it was seemingly highlight after highlight for both Walker and the Kansas City defense as the Chiefs went on to outscore the Broncos by a mark of 24-3 the rest of the way.

Walker broke 14 tackles as part of that effort according to NextGen Stats, racking up 117 yards after contact. In other words, Walker – whose 173 rushing yards marked the second-most by any veteran in their debut with a new team in NFL history – outgained the Broncos all by himself as part of a truly unforgettable night.

"I told you all [during] the first press conference [this year]. You all were asking about the difference with our offense, and I said K9," Mahomes said. "It's just that simple. It's the way he's able to run the ball and catch the ball."

Walker's top play of the evening took place when the game was still somewhat hanging in the balance.

Leading by just seven points and facing a short fourth down early in the third quarter, Kansas City elected to roll the dice and kept the offense on the field at its own 40-yard line. Walker then promptly rewarded that decision by bouncing outside and breaking free for a 60-yard touchdown run, providing Kansas City with a two-score lead it would never relinquish.

At the same time, while Walker was amassing the top night of his career, the Kansas City defense put on a show of its own. The Chiefs racked up four sacks and two takeaways on Monday night, holding Denver to its lowest total yardage output since the 2021 season.

"[They were] unbelievable," Reid said. "When you're playing that kind of defense, you can do things on offense and take chances…I thought the defensive line was tremendous, in the run and the pass game…Our secondary was flying around, [too]."

It all made for the definition of a statement win on Monday night following a season of frustrations in 2025, and while it was just one game, the collective performance – from the suddenly electric running game to a young defense that was making plays all night long – it certainly represented a big step in the right direction.

"It's a great way to start," Reid said. "[We] have a lot of games [coming up] here, but for the guys to see it put together like that, [after] going through the training camp that we had, which was tough, and then coming out and bearing down and seeing some production is great, and then knowing that there's more that we can do, and we can be better."

In terms of injuries, Mansoor Delane (shoulder) and linebacker Cooper McDonald (knee) left Monday's game early.

Next up, the Chiefs will need to turn the page quickly with a primetime showdown against the Indianapolis Colts looming on Sunday.
