Chiefs Defeat Raiders, 30-27, in AFC West Thriller

Kansas City remained perfect on the season with a win over Las Vegas

The Kansas City Chiefs moved to 4-0 on the season following a thrilling victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, 30-27, at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Leading by three points with just over a minute remaining in the game, Kansas City took the field for one final defensive series with the outcome hanging in the balance. Las Vegas managed to march to midfield, too, but safety Xavier Nwankpa picked off Raiders' quarterback Kirk Cousins on the penultimate play of the game to seal the victory.

The interception concluded an absolutely wild final five minutes of regulation that saw momentum flip back-and-forth on a number of occasions.

First, Las Vegas took a two-point lead with a 48-yard field goal following a 60-yard scoring drive, and the Raiders looked to be in position to get the ball back when Kansas City quickly faced a third down on its ensuing possession.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes stood firm in the face of a blitz, however, and found wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a 55-yard completion to move the chains down to the Raiders' 2-yard line. The jubilation of the play then quickly turned to concern for Thornton, who injured his ankle during the catch.

Thornton, who caught five passes for a career-best 111 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, had to be carted off the field, but in one of many acts of resiliency on Sunday, the offense came together to ensure his catch wasn't wasted. Tailback Ken Walker was in the end zone just one snap later, and Kansas City was back in front.

The Chiefs then looked to be in excellent shape when linebacker Jeffrey Bassa punched the ball free from Raiders' return man Dareke Young on the ensuing kickoff, setting Kansas City up with prime field position as the clock continued to tick. Walker found the end zone again just one play later – this time on a 22-yard run – and Kansas City's lead ballooned to 11 points in a matter of just 19 seconds of game action.

Las Vegas didn't quit though, and despite only three minutes remaining in the contest, the Raiders managed to make it a game.

Cousins led the Raiders all the way down the field and found tight end Brock Bowers for a 20-yard score – doing so in just one minute and 16 seconds – and while Kansas City recovered the onside kick that followed, the Chiefs quickly punted and gave the ball right back to Las Vegas with a little over a minute to go in the game.

Fortunately for Kansas City, punter Matt Araiza unleashed a booming, 52-yard kick that tailback Emmett Johnson downed at the Raiders' 1-yard line, creating a lofty task for Cousins and company that the Chiefs ultimately prevented.

"They're a good football team," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "We knew that coming in, and that it would take four quarters of good, hard football [to win]."

In total, 24 points were scored between the two teams beginning at the 4:58 mark in the fourth quarter, nearly matching the 33 total points that were scored in the proceeding 55 minutes of action.

Mahomes completed 15-of-30 passes for 225 yards and two scores in the game while Walker, who entered Sunday as the league's leading rusher, tallied 177 yards and two scores on the ground. It marked Walker's third game this season with 170+ yards from scrimmage.

Walker's biggest run – a 76-yard dash late in the third quarter – set up Kansas City's initial go-ahead touchdown before the craziness of the fourth quarter ensued.

It all helped the Chiefs become the AFC's only unbeaten team through four weeks as Kansas City sits atop the AFC West heading into its bye week.

"All-in-all, it was a good day," Reid said. "When you come away with this one – a hard-fought battle against a good football team – you take those."

In terms of injuries, other than Thornton, wide receiver Rashee Rice (hamstring) also left Sunday's game early.

Kansas City will now enjoy some much-deserved time off before returning in Week 6 for a matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.
