Chiefs Fall to Broncos, 28-24, in Divisional Heartbreaker

Kansas City dropped a tough one on Sunday

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a heartbreaker to the Denver Broncos, 28-24, in a game that came down to the wire on Sunday afternoon.

Kansas City possessed an 11-point advantage with less than nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but a relentless Broncos rally – which included two touchdowns in the span of just 11 plays over Denver's final two possessions – erased that lead with just under two minutes left in regulation.

Notably, the Chiefs were called for 11 penalties on Sunday that provided Denver with 105 yards. Those miscues allowed Denver to hang around and, as the game went on, take the lead.

Kansas City looked poised to rectify the collective errors that let Denver back into the game, however, when the Chiefs drove all the way to the Broncos' 1-yard line on their final possession, setting Kansas City up with three shots to take the lead in the closing seconds. Denver's defense held the Chiefs out of the end zone though, and Kansas City's late heroics came up just short.

The Chiefs actually seemed to have won the game for a moment when Mahomes found wide receiver Rashee Rice for a 1-yard score on fourth down as the clock struck zero, but a false start penalty nullified the touchdown, and Mahomes was sacked on the ensuing, final play.

"We just made too many mistakes throughout the game to win against a quality football team," said quarterback Patrick Mahomes. "We did a lot of good [things], but when you make mistakes, you're going to lose when you play a good football team."

The final score spoiled an otherwise impressive day for Mahomes, who threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns while spreading the ball around to nine different pass-catchers. His most productive target, rookie tailback Emmett Johnson, turned in the top game of his young career as part of that effort, hauling in five grabs for 128 yards and a score.

Johnson's touchdown – a 73-yard catch-and-run – took place on third down and provided Kansas City with an eight-point lead midway through the second quarter.

"I thought he did a great job today," Mahomes said. "He's done great the entire time he's been here, and as the season goes on, we'll continue to utilize him more and more."

Denver quickly responded with a touchdown of its own as quarterback Bo Nix found wide receiver Jaylen Waddle for a 1-yard score, but Kansas City then answered back with a 45-yard field goal by kicker Harrison Butker prior to halftime.

The Chiefs' defense proceeded to protect that lead throughout the third quarter, forcing three consecutive three-and-out possessions for Denver, while Mahomes added to Kansas City's lead with a 4-yard touchdown strike to tight end Noah Gray.

Kansas City seemed to be in total control when the Chiefs drove to midfield – up 11 points – with 13 minutes remaining in the game, but Denver went on to force a punt on the series, and as the contest barreled toward its heart-racing conclusion, the Broncos made play after play to rally back, take the lead and – with just one yard representing the difference between victory and defeat – seal the outcome.

"It was a big game, I'm not going to hide from that, but now we're in a dogfight for the division," Mahomes said. "You have to take it a week at a time, a day at a time and a play at a time
We've lost these last two games against two really good football teams, but I was proud of how the guys battled. It wasn't perfect, but we battled. We'll learn from it, [we'll] have to get better, and [we'll have to] find a way this next week to get back in the win column."

In terms of injuries, defensive tackle Peter Woods (stinger) left Sunday's game early.

The Chiefs will now aim to get back on track this upcoming Sunday with a matchup against the New York Jets.
