They devote their lives to protecting those that they've never met, selflessly stepping forward to defend all that we hold dear in this country.
These individuals don't join the service for recognition or fame, it's just simply what they feel called to do, forgoing personal ambition to become a part of something much larger than themselves.
They're the brave few who make up our Armed Forces, and some of our nation's very best are right here in Chiefs Kingdom.
The Chiefs have a rich history of supporting our men and women in uniform throughout the years, including through the "Tribute to the Troops" program at Arrowhead Stadium, which recognizes the real heroes in our community during every home game.
That initiative will take place once again this week as Technical Sergeant Kenyan Francis will be recognized as the "Tribute to the Troops" honoree during the Chiefs' season-opening matchup against the Denver Broncos.
An Air Traffic Controller, Technical Sergeant Francis is tasked with ensuring the safe and efficient flow of both military and civilian aircraft while also training numerous other controllers to handle this critical role.
It's an invaluable responsibility, and when asked why he decided to join our Armed Forces 12 years ago, Francis didn't mince words.
"Everything I have done has been in the service of our country," Francis said. "It has come with its sacrifices, but I wouldn't change anything. I am grateful to the Air Force for giving me a great life trajectory. It has set me up to be successful in all aspects of my life."
Francis, who has also recently begun managing, maintaining and improving the Air Traffic Control technology systems utilized across the world, went on to cite the various locations and interactions associated with his job that bring additional fulfilment on a daily basis.
It's often a thankless role despite its immense importance, but as the Chiefs take the field against Denver on Monday, the Arrowhead faithful will have their opportunity to show Francis the appreciation he so deeply deserves.
"I always greatly appreciate support for service members," Francis said. "The Kansas City Chiefs doing their part to show support for the service members in their community and to me is really meaningful. It shows they are prioritizing what we stand for, and what we are trying to accomplish."
