Game Recap: Chiefs vs Jags

Fourth quarter includes more Kansas City defense, Chiefs win


The temp was 88 degrees at kickoff. The excitement and anticipation both immeasurable, as the Andy Reid era began for the Chiefs. Jacksonville won the toss, elected to receive and had to punt on its opening drive.

The first drive for Chiefs QB Alex Smith lasted three plays, before the Jaguars blocked the Dustin Colquitt punt, resulting in a safety. JAX 2 KC 0.

On the very next drive, cue the Chiefs defense, led by Pro Bowl LB Justin Houston, who sacked Jags QB Blaine Gabbert for a 13-yard loss, leading to a Jags punt. Stepping back to receive the punt was Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster, who returned it for 36 yards. Moments later, Alex Smith recorded his first TD pass with the Chiefs, finding free-agent addition WR Donnie Avery for the five-yard TD. Chiefs K Ryan Succop added a PAT, KC 7 JAX 2.

After the Chiefs TD, the defense once again got active, highlighted by a tipped pass by Chiefs DT Dontari Poe on a 3rd and 9, forcing another Jaguars punt.

The Chiefs next series led to a punt, giving the Jags the ball on their 20-yard line. Jacksonville was able to get a first down on the drive, before Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers intercepted Blaine Gabbert's pass.


On the ensuing drive, Pro Bowl RB Jamaal Charles busted off 18 yards, taking the ball to the Jags three-yard line. Alex Smith took the next snap and threw his second TD of the day, this one to Chiefs WR Junior Hemingway. KC 14 JAX 2.


The second quarter saw the Chiefs continue to move the ball. Chiefs QB Alex Smith utilized RB Jamaal Charles, WR Dexter McCluster and his own legs, scrambling for a first down, inside the Jaguars 20-yard line.

Following the first down by Smith, Chiefs RB Cyrus Gray gained nine yards on the carry and two plays later, following a great block by Chiefs OL Jeff Allen, Jamaal Charles scored on a two-yard run. KC 21 JAX 2.

The Jaguars, trailing by 19 points, took possession of the next drive and on second down, Chiefs DE Tyson Jackson tossed Jags QB Blaine Gabbert for a 13-yard loss, forcing a third-and-long situation for the Jags, from their 17-yard line.

The next play Gabbert found Jags WR Ace Sanders for a 57-yard gain, but the Chiefs coaching staff called for a challenge, believing Sanders was down by contact. Advantage Chiefs, who won the challenge and the ball was placed short of the first down, forcing a punt.

The Chiefs offense took over on its 17-yard line with 3:22 remaining in the half.

Facing a third and three, Chiefs TE Anthony Fasano provided a fantastic block, giving Alex Smith time to find Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe for the first-down grab.

A few plays later, the Chiefs faced 3rd and 11, with 1:54 to play in the second quarter, but the completion from Smith to Bowe fell short of the first down, leading to a Dustin Colquitt 43-yardpunt, which was downed inside the Jaguars 20-yard line.

1:32 remained in the half, when the Jaguars took over. They didn't get far as later, Jags QB Blaine Gabbert was sacked by Dontari Poe, ending the half. KC 21 JAX 2.



The Chiefs opened the second half with a drive that moved into Jaguars territory, before stalling on the Jags 46-yard line, leading to a Dustin Colquitt punt.

On the Jaguars first drive of the second half, Chiefs Pro Bowl LB Justin Houston again made his presence felt, sacking QB Blaine Gabbert for the second time in the game, forcing a Jacksonville punt.

The Chiefs were unable to take advantage on the ensuing drive, leading to a Colquitt punt that pinned the Jags inside their 10-yard line. The Chiefs defense stood strong again, forcing a punt after Dontari Poe and Eric Berry converged for another sack of Blaine Gabbert.

Later in the quarter, Justin Houston added his third sack of the game, blowing past Jags RT Luke Joeckel, tossing Gabbert to the ground.

The score remained the same as the third quarter ended, KC 21 JAX 2.


The fourth quarter began with more Chiefs pressure on defense, highlighted by Pro Bowl LB Tamba Hali's pick-six, after intercepting Blaine Gabbert's pass, returning it 10 yards for the score. The Chiefs halted the Jaguars final drive, preserving the 26-point win, KC 28 JAX 2.
