The Kansas City Chiefs trail the New England Patriots, 17-14, at halftime as both teams kickoff the 2017 NFL season in Foxborough, Mass.

Chiefs' quarterback Alex Smith completed 16 of 19 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the half.

Smith found running back Kareem Hunt for a three-yard touchdown in the closing seconds of the half to inch within a field goal of New England. Smith hit Demetrius Harris for a 7-yard score earlier in the game.

Patriots' running back Mike Gillislee ran for two touchdowns in the half for New England.

Hunt shook off an early fumble to put together a solid half, rushing for 47 yards on seven carries while making two catches for eight yards.
