Chiefs Announce Coaches of the Week for Third Week of the Season

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their third Coach of the Week honors for the 2018 season. The awards go to Lee's Summit West coach Vinny Careswell and Gardner-Edgerton coach Ryan Cornelson.

As a result of this honor, both schools will receive a $500 player health and safety grant from the Hunt Family Foundation. Each school will also receive a Gatorade Sideline Kit, including coolers, bottles and Gatorade products. Additionally, both coaches will be presented congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and a certificate recognizing their selection.

Both coaches are now qualified for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which will be voted on later this fall. The Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award is selected by a panel comprised of the Missouri and Kansas Boards from the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association. One coach will be selected from the pool of weekly winners and will be honored at the 2019 Pro Bowl as the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year.

Careswell has led the Titans to a 4-0 record and the No. 2 ranking in Missouri Class 6. This past week West rallied to beat Missouri Class 5 No. 1 Staley 21-17.

"Receiving the Chiefs Coach of the Week award is a great honor for our players, coaches, and administration," Careswell said. "Lee's Summit West is a special place to teach and coach. Thank you to the Kansas City Chiefs organization for your involvement in Kansas City High School Football."

Gardner-Edgerton is also off to a 4-0 start in Cornelson's first year at the helm. Last season the Trailblazers finished 0-9 and the perfect start to this year is one of the best turnarounds in the Metro.

"On behalf of myself, our players, school, and community, I am very honored to receive this award from an organization that does so much for the Kansas City area and the youth of Kansas City," Cornelson said. "It means a lot to me and our team to be recognized by the Chiefs organization and it isn't possible without our whole team efforts."

In its 22nd season, the 2018 High School Coach of the Week Fueled by Gatorade is a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. This program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches for superior performance on a weekly basis while honoring individuals who are shaping today's youth and tomorrow's leaders.
