They devote their lives to protecting those that they've never met, selflessly stepping forward to defend all that we hold dear in this country.
These individuals don't join the service for recognition or fame, it's just simply what they feel called to do, forgoing personal ambition to become a part of something much larger than themselves.
They're the brave few who make up our Armed Forces, and some of our nation's very best are right here in Chiefs Kingdom.
The Chiefs have a rich history of supporting our men and women in uniform throughout the years, including through the "Tribute to the Troops" program at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which recognizes the real heroes in our community during every home game.
That initiative will take place once again this week as Major Justin Hamm will be recognized as the "Tribute to the Troops" honoree presented by Crown Royal during the Chiefs' matchup against the Washington Commanders.
A member of the U.S. Army for 12 years, Hamm began his career as an Infantry Platoon Leader in charge of training a 40-person unit in tactical operations, personnel management, and mission execution. His performance caught the attention of his superiors, and as Hamm continued to impress, he was later promoted to a Company Commander overseeing 150 soldiers.
"I managed complex missions, developed junior leaders, and ensured the company met all strategic objectives," Hamm said. "Throughout my career, I've led diverse teams in high-pressure environments, coordinated large-scale operations, and maintained accountability for millions of dollars in equipment – all while building strong, resilient teams capable of performing in dynamic and challenging conditions."
Indeed, Hamm has effectively managed others amidst a multitude of environments and circumstances during his career, which included two deployments to Afghanistan.
"Serving 12 years in the Army has been a transformative experience," Hamm said. "It has challenged me to lead under pressure, develop others, and grow into a resilient, mission-focused leader capable of managing people, operations, and resources in any environment."
Hamm, who now serves at the School of Advanced Military Studies at nearby Fort Leavenworth, has made a career out of serving others, and as the Chiefs take on the Commanders on Monday night, the fans in attendance will have an opportunity to show their appreciation for his dedication to our country.
"Being recognized by the Kansas City Chiefs is a deeply humbling and meaningful honor," Hamm said. "It's incredibly rewarding to see the values we live by in the military such as duty, teamwork, and perseverance acknowledged and celebrated by an organization that embodies those same principles on and off the field."
