They devote their lives to protecting those that they've never met, selflessly stepping forward to defend all that we hold dear in this country.
These individuals don't join the service for recognition or fame, it's just simply what they feel called to do, forgoing personal ambition to become a part of something much larger than themselves.
They're the brave few who make up our Armed Forces, and some of our nation's very best are right here in Chiefs Kingdom.
The Chiefs have a rich history of supporting our men and women in uniform throughout the years, including through the "Tribute to the Troops" program at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which recognizes the real heroes in our community during every home game.
That initiative will take place once again this week as Tech. Sgt. Jamie Gardner will be recognized as the "Tribute to the Troops" honoree presented by Crown Royal during the Chiefs' matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
A member of the Air National Guard since 2018, Gardner began her career as a logistics planner tasked with coordinating movement of personnel and equipment to support federal and state deployment initiatives. It was a major responsibility, and across two deployments to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, one that Gardner didn't take lightly.
"I worked with five states to deploy approximately 400 personnel and 60 short tons of cargo, directly supporting more than 100 air refueling missions," Gardner said. "During my second deployment, I experienced Typhoon Mawar and assisted with humanitarian efforts by helping clear runways, beaches, and hotels to support both military operations and the local community."
Gardner was awarded with a commendation medal for her efforts during the latter deployment, and now back in the United States, she serves as the Retention Office Manager for the 190th Air Refueling Wing at Forbes Field Air National Guard Base.
"In this position, I assist Airmen with their career development within the Air National Guard by providing mentorship, managing education benefits, and overseeing cash incentive programs," Gardner said. "I've built an incredible community of mentors and friends who inspired me to advocate for others."
Indeed, continuing the legacy of those who helped Gardner early in her career remains a major part of who she is. In fact, Gardner has made a point of representing lower enlisted Airmen at the base level and in Washington, D.C., where she has advocated to Congress to advance legislation supporting veterans and their families.
It's a mission close to Gardner's heart, and as she's recognized at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, she'll share that moment with those who were with her every step of the way.
"What makes this even more meaningful is being able to bring the three supervisors who've guided me throughout my career," Gardner said. "They've each played such a big role in shaping who I am today, and inviting them to share this experience feels like a small way to give back just a fraction of what they've poured into me. I'm just so honored and thankful to be a part of it."
