SALUTE TO SERVICE

Chiefs Recognize SSgt. Conner Walters as This Week's Tribute to the Troops Honoree Presented by Crown Royal

SSgt. Walters is stationed at nearby McConnell Air Force Base

They devote their lives to protecting those that they've never met, selflessly stepping forward to defend all that we hold dear in this country.

These individuals don't join the service for recognition or fame, it's just simply what they feel called to do, forgoing personal ambition to become a part of something much larger than themselves.

They're the brave few who make up our Armed Forces, and some of our nation's very best are right here in Chiefs Kingdom.

The Chiefs have a rich history of supporting our men and women in uniform throughout the years, including through the "Tribute to the Troops" program at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which recognizes the real heroes in our community during every home game.

That initiative will take place once again this week as Staff Sergeant Conner Walters will be recognized as the "Tribute to the Troops" honoree presented by Crown Royal during the Chiefs' home-opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

A member of the 22nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at McConnell Air Force Base in nearby Wichita, SSgt. Walters joined the service eight years ago in the hopes of traveling the world while also building a future for his family.

He didn't have to wait long, either, as SSgt. Walters was forward-deployed to Qatar in 2018 only a year after joining the Air Force.

"My deployment was challenging, but it strengthened my appreciation for family and the bonds formed with my co-workers," SSgt. Walters said. "We became like family, and that experience taught me to value every moment at home."

That perspective has remained with SSgt. Walters in the time since he returned to Kansas, and now at McConnell Air Base, his primary responsibility lies in maintaining some of the largest aircraft in the world.

"I perform and train others in routine inspections and maintenance," SSgt. Walters said. "We ensure the airworthiness and operational readiness for the Air Force's KC-46 Pegasus aircraft in addition to conducting repairs and troubleshooting any issues that arise during operations."

It's a critical job that doesn't always receive the attention that it deserves, but as the Chiefs take on the Eagles this weekend, the fans in attendance will have an opportunity to thank SSgt. Walters – a Chiefs fan himself – for all that he does for our country.

"Being recognized by the Kansas City Chiefs is an incredible honor," SSgt. Walters said. "Being a Chiefs fan, it's amazing seeing the opportunities that have been presented to myself and other service members."
