Pre-Camp Breakdown: Evaluating the QB Room Behind Patrick Mahomes

The Chiefs currently employ four quarterbacks on the roster heading into training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to kick off training camp in less than a month, and with the annual trek to St. Joseph nearly here, we're going to spend the next several weeks examining every position group on the roster heading into camp.

We'll begin at quarterback, where the Chiefs employ the league's best player in Patrick Mahomes. The 29-year-old Mahomes has led the Chiefs to the most regular-season (90) and playoff (17) wins of any team since 2018. His 17 career postseason victories trail only Tom Brady among quarterbacks in NFL history.

Additionally, Mahomes – who already has two NFL MVP and three Super Bowl MVP awards under his belt – also owns the league marks for touchdown passes (245) and passing yards (32,352) through 112 career regular-season games in NFL history.

Mahomes is undeniably on track to end his career as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen, and despite his immense resume, the best may still be yet to come.

Behind Mahomes, the Chiefs currently have three quarterbacks under contract who will compete for an opportunity to make the regular-season roster. Let's take a look at each, beginning with veteran signal caller Gardner Minshew.

Gardner Minshew

A six-year veteran, Minshew has suited up for the Jaguars, Eagles, Colts and Raiders during his professional career. He started nine games for Las Vegas last season, completing 203-of-306 passes for 2,013 yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 6.6 yards-per-attempt and posted a passer rating of 81.0.

A broken collarbone ended Minshew's lone season with the Raiders early, but it was only two years ago that Minshew nearly led the Colts to the playoffs and earned a Pro Bowl nod.

Overall, Minshew – who originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick in 2019 – has appeared in 59 games (with 46 starts) during his career, throwing for 11,950 yards and 68 touchdowns. He has the inside track to the Chiefs' backup quarterback job heading into camp.

Chris Oladokun

Oladokun returns to Kansas City for a fourth year after spending each of the last three seasons on the Chiefs' practice squad. A player often credited for his work as the scout team quarterback, Oladokun made the first regular-season appearance of his career in Week 18 of last season.

Prior to his career in the NFL, Oladokun spent time at the University of South Florida (2016-18), Samford University (2019-20) and South Dakota State (2021). His final season was perhaps his best, as Oladokun threw for 3,164 yards and 25 touchdowns in 15 games for the Jackrabbits. He also demonstrated an ability to be an effective dual-threat quarterback during his collegiate career, notably racking up nearly 500 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns for Samford in 2019.

Bailey Zappe

Zappe is back for his second stint with the Chiefs in 2025. A fourth-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2022, Zappe was briefly a member of Kansas City's practice squad last season after New England waived him prior to the campaign. He was then signed away from the Chiefs' practice squad in late October by Cleveland, where he made one start, before signing back with Kansas City in March.

For his career, the 26-year-old Zappe has completed 208-of-335 passes for 2,223 yards and 12 touchdowns in 15 appearances (with 9 starts).

Prior to entering the NFL, Zappe – who spent the first four years of his collegiate career at Houston Baptist – threw for 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns at Western Kentucky in 2021, setting FBS single-season records in both categories.

The Bottom Line

Minshew enters training camp as the Chiefs' backup quarterback due to his experience in the league, but the competition between Oladokun and Zappe for the third spot on the depth chart – whether that be on the active roster or the practice squad – will be one to watch.

Oladokun is a veteran of the Chiefs' offensive scheme at this point, while Zappe is only a handful of years removed from being the fifth quarterback selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

With the third spot on the quarterback depth chart up for grabs, both players will have their opportunity to show what they can do up in St. Joseph.
