Five Observations from Saturday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/2

Here are some quick notes from Saturday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 10th practice of training camp on Saturday morning as the three-time defending AFC champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Saturday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are below:

7/22 | 7/23 | 7/24 | 7/25 | 7/27 | 7/28 | 7/29 | 7/30 | 8/1

1. We livestreamed a portion of Saturday's practice.

We hosted our third "Training Camp Live" show of the summer on Saturday, which included a live look at practice, a conversation about the Chiefs' offensive tackle depth, and an appearance by Chiefs preseason play-by-play announcer Ari Wolfe.

We're currently scheduled to host one more "Training Camp Live" show on August 5.

2. Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson had a strong practice.

Johnson, who is now two years removed from the season-ending ACL injury he suffered during camp in 2023, made two standout plays on Saturday morning.

The first, which took place during 11-on-11 drills, featured Johnson providing sticky coverage in a dead sprint downfield before perfectly timing his jump and swatting the pass away without breaking stride. It was an excellent play that broke up what appeared to be a good throw, Johnson just made an even better move on the ball.

Johnson was then at it again when, during a 7-on-7 period, he broke up a deep pass down the middle of the field. It was another excellent play in 1-on-1 coverage for Johnson that saw him win on an island.

3. The Chiefs worked on a "goal-to-go" situation during Saturday's practice.

Kansas City focused on a "goal-to-go" scenario on Saturday that included quarterback Patrick Mahomes finding wide receiver Rashee Rice with a beautiful, over the shoulder throw for a touchdown. Mahomes then connected with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the back of the end zone one snap later.

The Chiefs executed that scenario for a handful of plays before then flipping around and working on a "backed up" situation that challenged the offense with executing the playbook in the shadow of its own goal post.

4. Some young receivers stood out on Saturday.

Rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals continued his impressive camp with a strong, tight-window catch over the middle during an 11-on-11 period. Royals snagged the ball out of the air and made a very difficult catch look easy.

Wide receiver Hal Presley, who signed with the Chiefs on July 21, also made a noteworthy play during 11-on-11 drills on Saturday with a leaping catch between two defenders deep downfield.

Rookie wide receiver Mac Dalena then ended practice on a strong note with a great catch deep down the field on the final snap of 7-on-7 drills.

5. Here's a look at Saturday's injury report.

The Chiefs were without linebacker Drue Tranquill (back), tight end Jared Wiley, wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), cornerback Kristian Fulton (knee), tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring), safety Deon Bush (hamstring) and wide receiver Skyy Moore (hamstring) due to injury on Saturday.

Next up, the Chiefs will return to the field on Sunday for the 11th practice of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
