Five Observations from Tuesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/5

Here are some quick notes from Tuesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 12th practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the three-time defending AFC champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are below:

7/22 | 7/23 | 7/24 | 7/25 | 7/27 | 7/28 | 7/29 | 7/30 | 8/1 | 8/2 | 8/3

1. We livestreamed a portion of Tuesday's practice.

For the final time this summer, we livestreamed a portion of Tuesday's practice along with commentary on the Chiefs' quarterback and linebacker rooms.

All previous livestreams, which include exclusive player interviews and significant looks at practice, are available on the Chiefs' YouTube page.

2. The Chiefs worked on driving the full length of the field on Tuesday.

It doesn't get any longer than the "long drive drill" the Chiefs worked through on Tuesday as the offense began the period at its own 1-yard line.

A "long drive drill" segment of practice, which seeks to simulate the real-world experience of playing in a game, challenges both sides of the ball with a series of plays ran in quick succession one after the other. Just like in a real game, the time between snaps is limited and substitutions only occur if the play design dictates it.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the first-team offense went on to run 15 plays during Tuesday's period, which included a tremendous throw where Mahomes moved to his right before zipping a pass across the field and into the arms of wide receiver Xavier Worthy. It was an awesome play that Mahomes has – somehow – normalized over the years.

Often considered one of the toughest – but most beneficial – drills of camp, Tuesday's "long drive drill" may come in handy if the Chiefs are faced with a 99-yard field at some point during the 2025 campaign.

3. Veteran wide receiver Tyquan Thornton had another strong day.

One of the standouts of training camp so far, Thornton continued his strong summer with another impressive practice on Tuesday. Notably, Thornton made a pair of outstanding catches during 7-on-7 drills that elicited cheers from the more than 5,000 fans in attendance.

The first catch featured Thornton making a smooth, over-the-shoulder grab deep down the sideline as the veteran receiver hauled in a beautiful throw from Patrick Mahomes. He then followed that up a bit later with a full-extension grab amidst traffic on another perfectly placed ball.

A former second-round pick with blazing speed (and still just 24 years old), Thornton is certainly making his case for a roster spot with another impressive day in St. Joseph.

"You get these opportunities to make plays, and he has done that," said Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy. "I think there's a lot of trust building right now between him and Pat. He's a smart kid. He does a lot of things the right way, you can tell he's been in this league a little bit, and he has that experience factor where he can help out these young guys, too."

4. One of the Chiefs' newest players stood out on Tuesday.

Wide receiver Key'Shawn Smith, who signed with the Chiefs on August 1, made one of the top plays of the morning when he completed an acrobatic catch deep down the sideline during 11-on-11 drills. The nearest defender actually made a great play on the ball, tipping it away from Smith's grasp initially, but the former SMU standout stuck with it and corralled the ball before going to the ground.

It was a great play by Smith, who caught 33 passes for 527 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games at SMU in 2024. Smith, who checks in at six-foot-tall and 187 pounds, originally signed with the Raiders after going undrafted this past spring.

A few other players who stood out on Tuesday were safety Glendon Miller, who punched the ball free for a forced fumble during 11-on-11 drills, and wide receiver Nikko Remigio, who made a great over-the-shoulder catch during a 1-on-1 period.

5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.

The Chiefs were without linebacker Drue Tranquill (back), wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), cornerback Kristian Fulton (knee) and tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring) due to injury on Tuesday.

Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Wednesday for the 13th practice of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
