Five Observations from Tuesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 7/22

Here are some quick notes from Tuesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the first practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the three-time defending AFC champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

"It was great to get the guys back out here, and it was great for our fans to show up in the numbers that they did," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "It was good to have that energy out here."

Every member of the roster, which now stands at 91 players after the signing of rookie wide receiver Hal Presley on Monday, arrived to Missouri Western State University on Sunday. The players then went through athletic testing and team meetings on Monday, which provided Coach Reid with his first opportunity to address the team in its entirety.

When asked to reveal the message he shared with the team on Monday, Reid emphasized the need to take advantage of every moment in St. Joseph.

"The main thing is urgency. The urgency – keep that up. Everybody's expectations are high," Reid said. "It comes down to the work that you take care of here, and the foundation that you build here."

The on-field portion of that process began on Tuesday with a non-padded, one hour and 25-minute practice. The session – which was the first of 17 practices at Missouri Western – kicked off a "ramp up" period that will eventually culminate in padded, two hour and 25-minute practices in the near future.

"These are ramp up days," Reid said. "It's a gradual ramp up – not only the length of the practice, but also starting with [just] shells on, and then working from there."

With all of that in mind, here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice.

1. Tuesday marked the first of two practices exclusive to Season Ticket Members.

Among the many benefits of being a Season Ticket Member is exclusive access to select practices up at camp, which was the case on Tuesday. STMs in attendance were treated to the annual pancake breakfast on the nearby pavilion before a full-team autograph session took place after practice.

The second practice exclusive to STMs is scheduled for August 7.

2. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a deep shot down the sideline on the first play of 7-on-7 drills.

Mahomes didn't waste any time firing up the crowd on Tuesday when he found Worthy for a huge gain deep down the sideline on the very first play of 7-on-7 drills. It was a beautiful throw by Mahomes and a great play by Worthy, who made the catch despite tight coverage.

Mahomes, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of establishing the Chiefs' deep passing game in 2025, spoke about the play following practice.

"That's what we have to do – we need to keep doing it though. We have great corners, so that will be a great challenge for us [offensively], but even on some of those that are incomplete, we can talk through those routes," Mahomes said. "That's the mindset – getting back to throwing the ball down the field. If we can do that, it'll open up the rest of the offense."

3. Safety Chamarri Conner hauled in an interception in the end zone.

It's common to hear groans when the defense makes a play at training camp, but as Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has pointed out over the years, it's just as important for the defense to make plays as it is for the offense to pile up highlights.

Safety Chamarri Conner was responsible for the top defensive play of the morning on Tuesday when he corralled an interception off of a deflection in the end zone during 7-on-7 drills. It was a heads-up play by Conner that could have just as easily dropped incomplete had he not stuck with it.

Another player who made a noteworthy play on Tuesday was defensive back Nazeeh Johnson, who jumped a route and tallied a pass-breakup during 7-on-7 drills.

4. Wide receiver Nikko Remigio made one of the plays of the day deep downfield.

Remigio, who appeared in five games for Kansas City last year, made perhaps the top play of the morning when he made a diving catch deep down the middle of the field during 11-on-11 drills.

It was a spectacular play by Remigio, who showed off excellent tracking skills to stick with the throw before completing the diving reception.

5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.

As Coach Reid foreshadowed on Sunday, offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor, cornerback Kristian Fulton and tight end Tre Watson each began camp on the "Physically Unable to Perform," or "PUP" list. All three players were in attendance for Tuesday's practice but did not participate.

Every other member of the roster was on the field for Tuesday's session, however, including players returning from injuries such as tight end Jared Wiley (knee), wide receiver Rashee Rice (knee) and offensive tackle Josh Simmons (knee).

Reid provided a bit of an update on Simmons, specifically, as the first-round pick continues to work his way back from a torn patellar tendon suffered last October.

"He did some good things. He worked in there with the 1s, and he did a nice job," Reid said. "He has things he needs to work on, but he'll keep doing that."

Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Wednesday for the second practice of training camp (and the first open to the general public). Even though most days are free to attend, tickets must be reserved online ahead of time.
