Five Observations from Thursday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/6

Here are some quick notes from Thursday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the eighth practice of training camp on Thursday morning as they continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Thursday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:

7/29 | 7/30 | 7/31 | 8/1 | 8/3 | 8/4 | 8/5

1. We livestreamed a portion of Thursday's practice.

We hosted a live broadcast from camp this morning that included a discussion about the Chiefs' defensive line and running back rooms.

This was the second of four scheduled camp livestreams. The final two are scheduled for Aug. 8 and Aug. 12.

2. Thursday's practice was a lighter, "10-10-10" session.

The Chiefs took the field for a lighter, "10-10-10" practice on Thursday following the three-straight padded practices that took place between Monday and Wednesday.

A "10-10-10" session, which is not padded, consists of what is essentially a circuit of 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays and 10 special teams plays. Each segment is of the 11-on-11 variety, but unlike a standard period, the idea is to demonstrate what success looks like for the three respective phases. During the "offensive period," for example," the first-team offense competes against a scout team defense in an effort to skew the results toward the offense.

Essentially, if the concept plays out properly, each segment of the team will experience what success looks like within the given scheme.

The Chiefs completed nearly three full circuits of the "10-10-10" format on Thursday with three offensive periods, three defensive periods and two special teams segments.

3. Cornerback Mansoor Delane recorded a pass-breakup during a "defensive" period.

Delane, who continues to wear a gold, "no-contact" jersey at practice, still managed to make a play on Thursday with a pass-breakup over the middle of the field during a "defensive" period of practice. The first-round pick has participated in every practice of training camp so far, but he's yet to compete in an 11-on-11 segment of a padded session. The lighter variety of Thursday's practice, however, meant that Delane could take the field for full-team drills, and as the interception demonstrated, he didn't waste the opportunity.

Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke about Delane's progress following practice.

"We're trying to be a little bit cautious with the shoulder," Spagnuolo said. "I think he's done a good job. You've seen him in and out of huddles – getting everything mentally. He's tried to keep the conditioning up."

Elsewhere on defense, safety Alohi Gilman picked off a pass during a "defensive" period a little bit later.

4. The offense balanced its periods of practice with downfield throws and the running game.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense worked through a handful of different focus areas during Thursday's session, including a period dedicated to downfield throws and a segment focused on the running game.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice was busy with several catches during the portion that emphasized downfield throws. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton was also involved, hauling in a deep ball near the end of the period.

Quarterback Justin Fields was also involved in the aforementioned period, notably finding wide receiver Jason Brownlee for a deep pass. The veteran quarterback spoke about the session following practice.

"For the offense, we were trying to really focus on the details – the timing of different routes, screens and stuff like that," Fields said. "It was more of a chill day, but at the same time, you have to lock in even more mentally."

5. Here's a look at Thursday's injury report.

Linebacker Drue Tranquill (back spasms), cornerback Kristian Fulton (hip), linebacker Jeffrey Bassa (groin), wide receiver Cyrus Allen (bone bruise on shin), wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder sprain) and defensive end Ashton Gillotte (hamstring) didn't practice for the Chiefs on Thursday.

Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (knee) didn't participate in Thursday's practice either, although his absence was planned.

Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (knee) also remains on the "Physically Unable to Perform" list (PUP) and did not participate in Thursday's practice.

Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Friday for the ninth practice of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
