Five Observations from Tuesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/18

Here are some quick notes from Tuesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 16th practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as they continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:

7/29 | 7/30 | 7/31 | 8/1 | 8/3 | 8/4 | 8/5 | 8/6 | 8/7 | 8/8 | 8/10 | 8/11 | 8/12 | 8/13 | 8/17

1. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes turned in the play of the day with a touchdown pass early in practice.

Mahomes continues to look outstanding as he works his way back to full strength following last season's knee injury, and Tuesday's practice contained yet another example of that remarkable progress.

The play, which took place during an 11-on-11 red zone period, saw Mahomes roll to his right before stopping on a dime as a looming defender went flying by. The three-time Super Bowl MVP then flipped a touchdown pass to wide receiver Rashee Rice to complete the sequence.

It was a terrific play that demonstrated Mahomes' trademark ability to cut and move amidst traffic while manipulating defenders with his body language.

The play was part of another strong practice for Mahomes, who later found wide receiver Cyrus Allen for a deep completion during a 7-on-7 period. Allen, who was facing 1-on-1 coverage, beat his man and hauled in the over-the-shoulder grab deep down the field to complete the play.

2. Kansas City participated in another "long drive drill" on Tuesday.

A hallmark of Head Coach Andy Reid's training camps, the "long drive drill" is essentially exactly what it sounds like: a sequence of plays ran consecutively without a break in order to simulate the true nature of a game.

The Chiefs have taken part in several "long drive drills" throughout camp so far, but what made Tuesday's edition different was that Kansas City began the segment at the offense's 1-yard line. The drill then tasked the offense with moving its way up the field away from the shadow of its own goal post.

The period – which challenged the first-teamers with 14 consecutive plays – took place amidst a light rain as the temperature mercifully hovered in the mid-70s throughout the morning.

3. Cornerback Mansoor Delane logged a pass-breakup on a quick slant during a 7-on-7 period.

Delane, who fully participated in a padded practice for the first time at training camp on Monday, was back at it and making plays on Tuesday. Notably, Delane – the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft – recorded a pass-breakup on a quick slant during 7-on-7 drills.

Elsewhere in the secondary, cornerback Melvin Smith also notched a pass-breakup on a quick throw over the middle during the same period.

4. Safety Xavier Nwankpa picked off a pass in red zone 11-on-11 drills.

One of the standouts of the Chiefs' time in St. Joseph, Nwankpa continued his strong camp with an interception in the end zone during an 11-on-11 red zone segment.

The rookie defensive back logged 30 total snaps (21 defensive, 9 special teams) in Saturday's preseason opener. He's a player to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.

Offensive tackle Josh Simmons (back), offensive guard Trey Smith (hip), offensive tackle Matt Waletzko (knee), linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee), wide receiver Jimmy Holiday (groin), offensive tackle Chu Godrick (ankle) and wide receiver Jeff Weimer (hamstring) didn't practice for the Chiefs on Tuesday.

Defensive end Ashton Gillotte (foot) and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton (hamstring) left early.

Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (knee) also remains on the "Physically Unable to Perform" list (PUP) and did not participate in Tuesday's practice.

In some good news, safety Chamarri Conner (knee), cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (knee), cornerback Kader Kohou (ankle) and linebacker Drue Tranquill (back spasms) each returned to practice on Tuesday in a limited capacity after missing time in recent days.

Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Wednesday morning for the 17th practice of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
