Five Observations from Saturday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/8

Here are some quick notes from Saturday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 10th practice of training camp on Saturday morning as they continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Saturday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:

7/29 | 7/30 | 7/31 | 8/1 | 8/3 | 8/4 | 8/5 | 8/6 | 8/7

1. We livestreamed a portion of Saturday's practice.

We hosted our third livestream from training camp on Saturday morning, which featured some live segments of 7-on-7 drills in addition to a discussion about the Chiefs' tight end and linebacker rooms.

Our final livestream from camp is scheduled to take place on August 12.

2. The Chiefs wrapped up a stretch of six straight practices on Saturday.

Kansas City completed one of the toughest stretches of camp on Saturday, wrapping up a span of six straight practices – five of which took place in pads.

The practice, which spanned two hours and 25 minutes, included three offensive vs. defensive 11-on-11 periods, a 9-on-7 segment, a 7-on-7 period and a special teams portion.

The Chiefs have six padded practices (and eight total practices) remaining in St. Joseph.

3. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a handful of classic throws.

Mahomes showed off a handful of the off-balance throws for which he's synonymous on Saturday, firing a pair of near identical passes across his body while on the run to a receiver in the middle of the field. Mahomes found Andrew Armstrong on the first instance, followed by a throw to Nikko Remigio a little bit later.

The three-time Super Bowl MVP, who has participated in every 11-on-11 segment of training camp so far, spoke following practice about his progress as he continues to work his way back from last season's knee injury.

"[The knee] feels great. [I'm] just pushing every single day and trying to stack days together," Mahomes said. "I feel like when [I'm] tired, sometimes I don't even think about it. I'm trying to protect it, but at the same time, I'm trying to push it and get myself ready for the season."

Elsewhere on offense, fellow quarterback Justin Fields made a great throw – a pass of 40 or so yards – down the sideline to wide receiver Jason Brownlee, who hauled in a contested catch during 11-on-11 drills.

On the other side of the ball, linebacker Nick Bolton and cornerback D'Arco Perkins-McAllister each notched pass-breakups during Saturday's initial 11-on-11 segment.

4. The Chiefs wrapped up practice with a 16-play "long drive drill."

Head Coach Andy Reid's training camps are often cited for their difficulty, and Saturday's final 11-on-11 offensive vs. defensive drill was a textbook example of why that reputation exists.

Two hours into a sixth straight day of practices, Reid had the first-teamers on each side of the ball run through a 16-play "long drive drill," which simulates the "real" nature of a game with several plays in quick succession without a break.

It's a grueling drill, particularly as the capstone of a difficult stretch, but time and time again over the years, players have pointed to moments like that as the instance that prepared them for when it mattered most late in the season.

5. Here's a look at Saturday's injury report.

Offensive guard Trey Smith (hip), linebacker Drue Tranquill (back spasms), wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder sprain) and defensive end Ashton Gillotte (hamstring) didn't practice for the Chiefs on Saturday.

Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (knee) didn't participate in Saturday's practice either, although his absence was part of a planned management schedule.

In some good news, cornerback Kristian Fulton (hip) and linebacker Jeffrey Bassa (groin) each returned to practice in a limited capacity.

Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (knee) also remains on the "Physically Unable to Perform" list (PUP) and did not participate in Saturday's practice.

Next up, the Chiefs will have the morning off on Sunday before returning on Monday for the 11th practice of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
