The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 17th practice of training camp on Wednesday morning as they continued their preparation for the upcoming season.
Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Wednesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:
7/29 | 7/30 | 7/31 | 8/1 | 8/3 | 8/4 | 8/5 | 8/6 | 8/7 | 8/8 | 8/10 | 8/11 | 8/12 | 8/13 | 8/17 | 8/18
1. The Chiefs took the field in pads for the final time at Missouri Western this summer.
Kansas City competed in its 11th and final padded practice of training camp in St. Joseph on Wednesday morning. The two-hour and 25-minute practice included multiple 11-on-11 periods and a 7-on-7 segment before wrapping up with one final "long drive drill" near the end of the session.
In terms of offensive standouts, rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen hauled in a great over-the-shoulder catch amidst coverage during 1-on-1 drills early in Wednesday's practice. Allen then flashed again a bit later when quarterback Patrick Mahomes found him on a tight window throw for a touchdown during red zone 11-on-11 drills.
Elsewhere, wide receiver Jalen Royals had a strong day with multiple leaping catches in traffic. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier turned in a memorable play, too, when he evaded pressure during an 11-on-11 segment before finding wide receiver Omari Evans for a touchdown in the back of the end zone.
2. Safety Jaden Hicks logged a diving interception during 11-on-11 drills.
Hicks recorded one of the top plays of the morning when he corralled a diving interception over the middle of the field during an 11-on-11 period.
It marked another impressive moment for Hicks, who made several plays in Kansas City's preseason opener last weekend.
"I think he stuck out as [the player] who played the best in that particular game," said Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. "He had a really good day here on Monday, he was a little down yesterday, but then he made a big play today. He's on that trajectory, and he should be – he's been in this system for a while now. Those kind of guys, I put a little more pressure on because I don't expect them to make the mistakes a rookie might make."
3. Linebacker Cooper McDonald batted a pass at the line of scrimmage.
A defensive player who stood out on Wednesday was linebacker Cooper McDonald, who – during an 11-on-11 segment – stuck with the quarterback on a rollout and got his hands up to swat the pass away at the line.
McDonald, a tryout player who went on to make the team and appear in all 17 games last season, remains one of the great stories of the last few years.
Another player who made a handful of plays on Wednesday was rookie cornerback D'Arco Perkins-McAllister, who broke up a pass during 11-on-11 drills before flipping his hips and hauling in the loose football for an interception. The pass-breakup alone was a solid play, but Perkins-McAllister's ability to stick with the ball and complete the takeaway made it one of the top plays of the morning.
The rookie defensive back was then back at it a bit later when he provided sticky coverage on a deep route down the sideline. The play, which took place during 7-on-7 drills, ultimately saw Perkins-McAllister complete a leaping pass-breakup to thwart an otherwise significant gain.
4. Kansas City signed linebacker Cam Jones on Tuesday morning.
The Chiefs made a roster move on Tuesday, signing linebacker Cam Jones and waiving rookie defensive end Anthony Dunn.
Jones, who appeared in 34 games for Kansas City between the 2023 and 2024 seasons, took the field in 10 games for the New York Jets in 2025. He brings a familiarity with Steve Spagnuolo's scheme and extensive special teams experience to Kansas City as he enters his fourth season in the NFL. In fact, Jones' 284 special teams snaps in 2024 ranked fourth on the Chiefs.
5. Here's a look at Wednesday's injury report.
Offensive tackle Josh Simmons (back), offensive guard Trey Smith (hip), offensive tackle Matt Waletzko (knee), linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee), wide receiver Jimmy Holiday (groin), defensive end Ashton Gillotte (foot) and wide receiver Jeff Weimer (hamstring) didn't practice for the Chiefs on Wednesday.
Wide receiver Jeff Caldwell (knee) left early.
Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (knee) remains on the "Physically Unable to Perform" list (PUP) and did not participate in Wednesday's practice, either.
In some good news, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who left Tuesday's practice early with a hamstring injury, was back in action on Wednesday morning. Offensive tackle Chu Godrick (ankle) also returned to practice after missing the two previous days.
Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Thursday morning for the 18th and final practice of training camp. For more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
