Five Observations from Wednesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/12

Here are some quick notes from Wednesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 13th practice of training camp on Wednesday morning as they continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Wednesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:

7/29 | 7/30 | 7/31 | 8/1 | 8/3 | 8/4 | 8/5 | 8/6 | 8/7 | 8/8 | 8/10 | 8/11

1. We livestreamed a portion of Wednesday's practice.

For the fourth (and final) time this summer, we livestreamed a portion of Wednesday's practice on the Chiefs' YouTube page.

The stream, which included an appearance from preseason play-by-play broadcaster Ari Wolfe, featured a discussion about the Chiefs' offensive line and wide receiver rooms.

2. The Chiefs wrapped up a stretch of eight padded practices in 10 days.

Kansas City completed a grueling stretch on Wednesday that included eight padded practices in 10 days.

For context, due to league rules, the Chiefs hadn't taken the field for a padded practice prior to this stretch since last season ended. Once the "ramp up" portion of camp was over, however, Head Coach Andy Reid didn't waste any time maximizing the Chiefs' time in St. Joseph.

"You need to have these days," said tight end Travis Kelce. "You need to have this time of grinding with the guys and being around [each other] all day, every day. [This is where] you start to create that chemistry and that standard of how we're going to do things."

Wednesday's practice featured a 9-on-7 segment, a 7-on-7 portion and multiple 11-on-11 periods, the latter of which included another "long drive drill" segment. The drill, which simulates the play-to-play nature of an actual game, challenged the first-teamers on each side of the ball with 12 consecutive plays without a break.

A hallmark of Coach Reid's training camps, this marked the fourth practice in a row with a "long drive drill" segment.

3. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a deep completion on the first snap of 11-on-11 drills.

Mahomes zipped a beautiful deep ball into the arms of Thornton on the very first play of 11-on-11 drills on Wednesday morning, continuing what has been a strong connection throughout camp so far.

Notably, Thornton was a standout just a few days ago with multiple catches during Monday's practice before logging another impressive performance on Wednesday.

The veteran receiver earned a roster spot (and ultimately another contract) following a memorable training camp in 2025, and now an established member of the Chiefs' receiving corps, Thornton – at least so far – looks primed to take another step forward in his development this season.

Elsewhere on offense, wide receivers Jeff Caldwell and Jalen Royals each notched a leaping, physical catch during Wednesday's 11-on-11 work.

4. The Chiefs will have a lighter practice tomorrow before Saturday's preseason opener.

The players will receive a bit of a break – relatively speaking – on Thursday with a lighter, non-padded practice following the aforementioned eight padded practices in just 10 days.

That break won't last long, however, as the Chiefs are set to take the field against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday to kick off the preseason. The game presents a major opportunity, particularly for those on the roster bubble, to show what they can do in a "live" setting as cutdown day inches closer.

"I can't wait, because for me, this is really the time I get to evaluate whether a guy can block and tackle on special teams," said Assistant Head Coach & Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub. "These guys have been hitting each other for a few weeks now, and it's getting old, so this will be great to have a game."

5. Here's a look at Wednesday's injury report.

Offensive guard Trey Smith (hip), linebacker Drue Tranquill (back spasms) and wide receiver Jimmy Holiday (groin) didn't practice for the Chiefs on Wednesday. Linebacker Nick Bolton (illness), defensive tackle Peter Woods (ankle) and tight end Jared Wiley (hamstring) left early.

Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (knee) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice either, although his absence was part of a planned management schedule.

Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (knee) also remains on the "Physically Unable to Perform" list (PUP) and did not participate in Wednesday's practice.

Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Thursday for the 14th practice of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
